This is called the equinox, and occurs close to March 21 and September 21.

The previous answer has it confused with the solstice (longest/shortest day of the year).

The Earth always has equal day and night. if averaged over the entire globe. What you may be referring to is the spring and fall equinox that occurs about March 21st and September 21st.

September is the next time this will happen, the other time of the year is March.

the equinox there is one in March and one in Sept.

the solstice is in June and Dec.
