Gamma Rays Are Negatively Charged

2016-10-25 08:41:36 · answer #2 · answered by ? 4 · 0 0

Composition and Charge:

Alpha particles are basically helium nuclei composed of two neutrons and two protons. The protons give alpha particles a positive charge. Beta particles are fast moving electrons and are negatively charged. Gamma rays are a form of energy that is part of the electromagnetic spectrum. They are neutral.

Speed and Penetration:

Alpha particles travel at about 1/20th the speed of light and can easily be blocked by paper. Beta particles travel almost at the speed of light and can be blocked by an aluminium sheet. Gamma rays travel at the speed of light and can only be blocked by a few centimetres of lead.

Deflection in a magnetic field:

Alpha particles are heavy and deflect very little in a magnetic field. Beta particles are lighter and have the greatest deflection in a magnetic field. Gamma rays are neutral and so do not undergo any deflection.

Alpha rays are matter based. They consist of atom nuclei (more precisely, helium-4 nuclei). They have a positive charge (+2) and are among the heaviest of simple radiation. They have a very high radiative index (meaning they can do a lot of DNA damage when absorbed) but little penetrating power: they cannot penetrate skin or a sheet of paper, but they can penetrate inner tissues like lung and stomach tissue. Beta rays are also matter based. They consist of high-speed electrons emitted when neutrons decay into protons and electrons. They have a negative charge (-1) and are extremely light. They can penetrate deeper than alpha rays, but they are less likely to cause serious DNA damage. Beta rays can penetrate wood, but 3 cm of wood will stop them. Gamma rays are electromagnetic rays, consisting of photons. Photons have a rest mass of almost 0, making them massless for all intents and purposes. They have very high penetrative power (a thick layer of concrete or a layer of lead is needed to stop them) but they are the least likely to cause serious DNA damage for a given quantity of radiation. They are emitted by metastable nuclei undergoing relaxation, and also when matter and antimatter annihilate each other.

Alpha - actually a particle, two protons and two neutrons together, no different than a helium nucleus.

Beta - also a particle, either an electron or a positron (anti-electron).

Gamma - a very high energy photon, more energy than an X-ray.

Alpha particles (named after and denoted by the first letter in the Greek alphabet, α) consist of two protons and two neutrons bound together into a particle identical to a helium nucleus; hence, it can be written as He2+ or 42He. They are a highly ionizing form of particle radiation, and have low penetration. The alpha particle mass is 6.644656×10-27 kg, which is equivalent to the energy of 3.72738 GeV. The charge of an alpha particle is equal to +2e, where e is the magnitude of charge on an electron, e=1.602176462x10-19C.

Beta particles are high-energy, high-speed electrons or positrons emitted by certain types of radioactive nuclei such as potassium-40. The beta particles emitted are a form of ionizing radiation also known as beta rays. The production of beta particles is termed beta decay. They are designated by the Greek letter beta (β). There are two forms of beta decay, β− and β+, which respectively give rise to the electron and the positron.

Gamma rays or gamma-ray (denoted as γ) are forms of electromagnetic radiation (EMR) or light emissions of a specific frequency produced from sub-atomic particle interaction, such as electron-positron annihilation and radioactive decay; most are generated from nuclear reactions occurring within the interstellar medium of space. Gamma rays are generally characterized as EMR, having the highest frequency and energy, and also the shortest wavelength, within the electromagnetic radiation spectrum, i.e. high energy photons. Due to their high energy content, they are able to cause serious damage when absorbed by living cells.

alpha = 2 protons and 2 neutrons, often called a helium nucleus. It carries a positive 2 charge. Weakest ability to penetrate of the three types. Clothing will protect you from this radiation penetrating your body, but if it is inhaled or swallowed it cannot get out of your body and will cause radiation sickness.

beta = high speed electrons ejected by the nucleus. It carries a negative charge. You need to wear heavy cover-alls to protect yourself from this radiation.

gamma = made of electromagnetic radiation. It is not matter like alpha and beta so it has no mass and no charge. This is the most penetrating form of radiation. You need several inches of lead to protect yourself from this type.
