The Persians first came up with the idea in an early form of Zoroastrianism. Although previous religions had good gods and bad gods, they were the first to come up with the god of ultimate good and god of ultimate evil duality, which they called Ahura Mazda and Angra Mainyu.
Early Judaism didn't have such a being to represent evil. The Christians later adopted the duality and incorporated it into their own superstition, making him a "fallen angel" instead of a twin brother.

He is more than just an 'idea'
He is a factual spirit creature that opposed Almighty God.
He was created a good angel but used his free will to seek worship for himself.
He did offer all the riches and power of this world in return for one act of worship to him. Jesus refused, stating he shouls worship ONLY God.
this in fact proves also that Jesus is NOT Almighty God.
Satan has approached God in heaven.
(Job 1:6-7) Now it came to be the day when the sons of the [true] God entered to take their station before Jehovah, and even Satan proceeded to enter right among them. 7Â Then Jehovah said to Satan: “Where do you come from?” At that Satan answered Jehovah and said: “From roving about in the earth and from walking about in it.”
(Job 2:7) So Satan went out away from the person of Jehovah and struck Job with a malignant boil from the sole of his foot to the crown of his head.

There are 2 sides to everything so we had to have a good guy and a bad guy. The good guy was used to influnce the people to follow there beliefs, The bad guy to show what happens if you dont and a scape goat for all the problems that come forth. Religions are a multi trillion dollar business and so are goverments. So they created the means to control the people even though they are immune to there own laws. Fear and ignorance is the magic of the the game for the rules are in there court.

There's a good show about it on the history channel I think.
The image of satan comes from the pagan horned god who is supposed to resemble an elk or deer.
And Pan from mythology.
I'm pretty sure the idea was to scare people.

he started off as lucifer who was an angel, he did not see why he could not be like God, he challenged him and the archangel michael defeated him and sent him to hell.
thats the story and most people believe the idea of satan was created to aid the idea of God's existence, if good exists, evil has to.

Satan was an angel created by God, but at the onset, he rebelled against God and believed himself to be greater than God.
