Queens is part of Long Island. It is referred to as Queens because it was incorporated in the City of New York during the consoladation of 1898 when Brooklyn and Staten Island as well as the Bronx all became "New York City". So Queens is a distinct Borough or County of the City rather than being labeled part of Long Island. Nassau and Suffolk counties are on long island as well, but are not part of the city, so they are referred to as "the island"

Long Island City is named this because when it was founded, it was the gateway to Long Island itself. Remember, Brooklyn to the south was its very own city before consolidation, in fact it was the #3 largest American city.

In the New York City metropolitan region, you have four distinct zones. There is the City itself and its five boroughs that surround it. You have New Jersey to the west across the Hudson River, you have Upstate New York which is to the North, and you have Long Island to the East, after passing through Brooklyn or Queens.

Hope this provides you with some understanding

That's true, Long Island City is 1 of the Westernmost parts of the Borough of Queens (along with Astoria).

However, remember that once upon a time Queens & Brooklyn were considered to be parts of Long Island, that is until they got incorporated into NYC.

True it's located on the western edge of Queens. Yet Long Island City technically is located on the same island as Brooklyn, Suffolk, Nassau, and other parts of Queens. The area was named over before everyone knew what a suburb was.

Actually it is in Long Island. Many people dont know that Both queens and Brooklyn are part of Long Island. They are the western most parts. They arent usually mentioned as part of "long island" because they are incorporated within NYC as a whole.

What do you mean in Long Island? As an island Queens and Brooklyn are physically on the island even though they are already a part of NYC.
