Bismillahi Rahmani Rahim - In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
Hello. Well, the true striving Muslim always tries to live his life according to the teachings of Islam, which were imparted to us in such an excellent manner by our beloved Prophet Muhammad, may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him.
I would love a return to the true practice of Islam. It is completely consonant with the modern world. If true Islam were being lived today, there would be no fields of opium poppies in Afghanistan. There would be no women having female genital mutilation committed against them. There would be no children sold into slavery and prostitution. There would be no suicide bombers. There would be no banks that break the backs of poor people by devouring usury. People would be good stewards of the enviroment and we would respect the land and take care of it better. There would be no corruption in the courts. There would be no despotic leaders.
The true teachings of Islam are timeless. Living an Islamic life can be done by a conservative goat herder in Syria and a thoroughly modern Millie in the US. A person can be a strong Muslim and utilize all the good things that modernity has brought about, medicine and communiciation technology, everything we enjoy in the modern world. There is no either / or. I don't have to decide to be religious or modern. I am an American Muslim woman. I cover, I pray, I fast, I work on the computer, I share my life with a good Muslim husband and I take part in the good things of this world while trying to live according to the example of Prophet Muhammad, pbuh. There is no dichotomy involved in that.
The modern Islam, where as you say people have less knowledge of Islam, is a disaster on all fronts. Because we don't know our rights and duties in Islam, we allow despots to rule us, we don't pursue education so that we Muslims are first in the world in all areas, we suffer the same diseases of drug use and promiscuity as the rest of the world, and we fall into superstition and become slaves to cults of personality who twist the religion and turn it into something unrecognizable. Do you think an Osama bin Laadin could thrive in a world where people truly lived their Islam? He would be rightly ignored. Would the farmers in Afghanistan allow one poppy plant to be planted if they truly understood Allah's wrath toward them? They'd never do such a thing.
Islam is the cure to the diseases of the world today, but unfortunately so many people don't know how to take their medicine. Islam is rigid in some respects - you will never be allowed to change the number of prayers or say that God is more than one - but it is flexible in dealing with the rapidly changing world of today. THAT is the Islam that I practice.
I pray that Allah guides you to that which is best in this world and the next. Ameen.
Fi Aman Allah,
Nancy Umm Abdel Hamid

Your question reflects your ignorance about Islam. You know nothing beyond the year you born!
The more you read about "the Dark-ages of Europe" the more you know about Islam and Muslim research & inventions during the period, specially during 8th -11th Century AD.
Islam is the last and final religion of God hence it should be based on advance idealogy in respect of religious faith and human knowledge.
Quran is the final word of God and it is rightly characterized as "Miracle of Miracles" because it influanced Muslim to find and explore the Truths of the universe defined by God in various verses.
It may be a surprise to you that more than 1000 verses (out of 6000) of Quran discuss about universal facts and scientific laws 1,400 yeas ago which were not known to mankind untill 19th and 20th Century AD?? Read Quran and you will find that Big-Bang theory is already there.
Islam started in 6th AD., and within 150 years it expanded to Middle-east and South Eupope (Spain) from where Euprope took some light for its future progress. Your progress is only 200 yeas old!!
Unfortunately Muslims could not maintain their progress and achievements and now it has become a fiary tale!!
There is no "Old Islam" or "New islam" ???
Islam is a perfect religion & idealogy for all sorts of believers and still valid for modern civilizations and cultures.
Hope you read authentic history of Islam!

Islam is a great truth, never withering, always green, read the following by Bernard Shaw a british dramatist of 20th century, greatest perhaps equal or greater to shakespeare:
And Bernard Shaw, though not accepted Islam, but spoke truly, "I like religion of Mohammad for it completeness. This is the only religion which does not become obsolete and useless by the passage of the time. But it provides; right, uniform and correct guidance in all ages. And I have studied the life of that miraculous man Mohammad, and I think his name should be, Deliverer of the Universe". Despite that he was against Christianity but I am sure that if he is given governance in this atomic age, all the problems would be solved and blessedness would prevail. I prophesize, that European people will accept religion of Mohammad, in the near future.

There really is no difference between both, Islam is a way of life which can be practiced throughout in accordance with teachings of our prophet. One can have a good understanding of Islam and still be capable of living in the modern world where technology is avaliable. It probably depends on how individuals perceive it and not all people like change.

Islam always has been and always will be the correct way of life for those that choose to follow it....how we interpret it and behave accordingly changes with time...but the message remains eternal.
I prefer the Islam that God states is easy and not burdensome to the true believers...Islam in which God is Merciful and Forgiving to all and not just to a select few...and the Islam in which gender doesnt matter...just piousness(taqwa)

There is no difference.
Religion doesn't change.
If you ask, what is Islam's point of view regarding Cars, internet, medicine, etc etc...
Islam taught us that anything useful is good and anything hurtful is bad.
So, looking at Internet:
If you use internet to browse, chat, looking for help, then Internet is Halal (permissible).
But if you use the internet to check ****, look at how to make drugs, then you are using the internet in a bad way, so Internet here becomes ***** (prohibited)

True Islam is not to change the rules of Islaam, to contribute to society while obeying those rules and you can use technology to help you. Knowledge is essential for this.
