LOL I had to laugh. I've just been through all this with my teenage son. He goes back to NZ once a year for a month or two.

He got his 'L' NZ license January 06 when he was there (age 15) this January just gone he got his P plates (16 yrs)

IF you have a NZ license, Legally you CAN drive in Aussie on your it for 3 months, after that you can transfer it to a Aussie one. (double check with your state transport site though - I am going by Qld one) Search for - Driving in Australia on an International or NZ license).

......... but there is a legal flaw in the system. On the Qld transport website for instance, it does not state an age to transfer a NZ license over to a P one. - has to be 17 years here to get a P one)

I had to fight and fight it ........ eventually I won (for my son) and alot of complaints into Qld Transport I can tell you.

You have to be sneaky though... if you are in NZ on a holiday they will not let you get a license.. you need to prove you live there. So - wherever you are staying, open a bank account - put say $50 in there - this way you have proof of a bank statement that you reside in NZ. (as you won't have a power bill or phone bill in your name at your age, a bank account is the easiest way to do this) - or if you have an IRD (tax) number that will also do.
(but I didn't tell you this ok !!)
:-)

So if and when you get your L plates in NZ - transfer them when you come back to Aussie for L plates here... that way you don't need to sit the test twice..... and you can drive in NZ immediately - the day you pass your license. My son got a little motorbike to run around on for freedom - he loved it.

Good Luck

True that. Not just love stories. It's foolishness to compare any part of life with movies.
