Which parts of the brain and which neurotransmitters supress the pain when you let's say step on a needle while walking on a high rope thus prevent you from reacting?

If you step on a needle you are going to feel the pain. What keeps a person from reacting and falling off the rope is making a common sense choice. The person has to choose to either tolerate the pain and keep his balance, or he can choose to react and fall off the high rope and possibly suffer death or injury and MORE pain.
