My 7 year old step-son tried to get out of a lesson yesterday with a letter that read as follows:
"Dear Mrs Horton, I am Johnny's stepmum, honest I am. Please let him out of school early as he has to feed the goats on our farm today as I have a sprained arm. Love from Johnny's stepmum (signed name)."
The teacher rang up laughing her head off at this. How can I keep straight face to tell him off for being naughty? (His father is away at the moment, so I can't pass it onto him, LOL.)

No, Annie. His school doesn't break up until Friday.

Although it's funny now,you won't be laughing in a few years time when he signs your cheques!
Just explain that your willing to write and SIGN letters for him to leave school if it's for a good reason IE....dentists,doctors appointments and tell him from now on you will ask the school to contact you by phone for any letter written by you or your stepson lol.
Aren't kid's great and yours shows great resolve...he'll go far...ps..try covering your mouth with your hand when talking to him I'd find it hard not to grin too.

I would write a letter to Santa from "Johnny" that went something like this:
Dear Santa,
I want you to give all of my Christmas gifts for the next 5 years to needy children. I think that this would be a very kind thing for you to do. I don't need anything, and I don't want anything. Maybe I will not want another gift for the rest of my childhood. I hope you make some other child very, very happy with the things that were intended for me.
Sincerely,
Johnny
Then I would leave this letter somewhere that Johnny was sure to find it. When he approached me about it, I would say, Johnny, I thought you would be ok with me writing a letter to santa on you behalf. Just like you thought that I would be ok with you writing a letter to your teacher and signing my name. I think, if he is as smart as he appears, he will get the point. I would make him write a letter of apology to the teacher though, and sign his own name.(LOL)

This is hardly a serious crime however you must discourage him from trying to skip school as this will only get worse down the line.
If you need motivation then take a look on the streets at the drug-riddled, school skipping types that hang around during the day and think how much you would hate your stepson to end up like them.
A very funny letter but important to see serious side as well.

Yes that is funny. However, what he did is terribly wrong. He used your name and signed your name. As someone else suggested would you be laughing in a few years when he is signing your cheques.
In years gone by, his actions would generate at least a dozen swats on the bottom.
You need to do at least three things. First make sure his dad knows what he has done. Second, ask his dad if it is ok to punish him for this crime. Third and last carry out that punishment.

Ok this is hilarious but why would a 7 year old be trying to get out of school early?
I wouldn't tell him off until I knew what was going on, is he being picked on and wanted to get out of school before anything happened. Is he being pressured into something by friends. There could be something going on that his teacher doesn't know about.
Have a chat with him, see what you find out and then deal with him accordingly. You'll be surprised how easy it is not to laugh when it comes down to it.

Just tell him it was a nice try, but the teachers do know what your writing looks like and you use special paper when you write a note to them anyway, so that they know if it's a fake!! Don't tell him off too much, it was harmless really wasn't it? The teacher's are not silly, and they know that if you are not going to let a seven year old come home on his own anyway. Surely you must pick him up from school? So don't worry about it.

That's really funny. Why not laugh? And then punish him for trying to pull one over on the teacher this way?
Make him actually FEED the goats. And clean the barn. And the garage. The house. The cars.
Get it?
It can be funny. You are allowed to laugh at it. But he still get's punished for the lie.

What a huge smile that put on my face! What a cutey pie and inventive!
I loved the answers you received also! :-)
I guess now you know to keep an eye out- because he is so smart! :-)
I would just be honest.Tell him it is wrong to do that. But listen to him when he explains why he did it.
Save the letter! The whole family and further generations will sure get a kick out of it. What a hoot! Love it! :-)
Best wishes!

Well you have to admire them for their inventiveness - one of mine came up with some amazing excuses for some misbehaviour and I had to walk away and have a laugh. He now makes a living as a writer!
You must tick him off for this but that should suffice - *do* keep the letter - you will all look back on it and laugh in years to come - and you can show it to *his* children when he has them and make them realise that Daddy was not always perfect as a little boy.
Thank you for giving us a nice chuckle.
Best wishes,
Joan.

Yes it was funny and clever but no, you can't let him get away with it. Make him write a note apologizing to the teacher. Then try and find out why he wanted to leave early. Was something wrong in school or did he just have better things to do?
