My Big Brother Is a Hero

There have been many wars
I’ve grew up hearing from those around me
My Great Grandfather was a hero he fought in the civil war
My Grandfather was a hero he fought in the world war
Then I say with pride
My big brother is a hero he fought in Vietnam
Then all would say OH that was not a war

I looked it up in the dictionary and there it is in black and white
“War: struggle between opposing forces”
From what I saw on the news it looked like war to me
I would tell people that my Brother is a hero, he did not run and hide
He did his duty as a soldier
Then they would whisper “But he is in Vietnam”

I can remember when I was about five
Watching Bob Hope’s special on TV
Excited by every glimpse of our soldiers on TV
Everyone a hero
Then I saw my Brother in the crowed so very far away
And in my child’s mind I knew that this meant my Brother and his friends
Must be heroes
Because why else would Bob Hope put on a show

Then the time came for my Big Brothers home coming
I was so proud
But I was told not to pester him because he fought in Vietnam
I wanted so much to hear the “War Stories”
As I had heard from my older kin
But I was told this one is different he fought in Vietnam
So I did not ask, I kept quiet, I tried not to pester him

Now nearly 30 years has came and gone
Here I set at my Big Brother’s side
Looking at pictures from when he fought in Vietnam
I ask questions
And he answers them
I have one thing left to say
“My Big Brother Is a Hero, He Fought in Vietnam!”

These words came to me when I was using my talents of finding people and research to find some army buddies for my brother. I read so many posting of vets from Vietnam that are still hurting from what are country did to them, I wanted to something special for them and my brother.

I thank you all for taking the time to read it. I posted this because I heard some of Cindy Sheham’s BS on TV. You may not like the war but the time of protesting ended when the first US Military personal was put in harms way. Her hateful words leave far worse scars that any enemy bullet.

And you should have seen it before I ran grammar and spell check. I swear all of the little red and green lines went away before I posted this. Also sometimes when you speak from the heart you can’t always fit the words into any standard format.

thank your brother for serving, yes he is a hero... and yes it was a war... and thank you for writing this... I liked it...

Tracers stitch the night sky
With dashes of light
I am scared and angry,
Whose is this fight?
Death dozes in palm groves
Don’t wake her! Let her sleep!
If she opens her eyes
More mothers will weep,
Rice paddy mirrors
In the hell of lush green
I know where I am
But forgot where I’ve been
I know what I am,
But don’t know my heart -
a stranger despairing
in the dead of the night
with my weeping soul
Over a young man
They both knew once,
man who liked to sing
and smile and dance…
He is dead now, never to come back
But there will be no funeral
No final farewell,
nor from children waves
No weeping willow
fingers caressing his grave,
missing, another cross
in the gardens of stone…
He lives on, with his spirit gone…

EDIT: Jenner, thank you... I salute you... SF, the guardian angels in the shadows, our eyes and ears and often our saving grace, very often our saviors...

I enjoyed reading your poem! Your brother is a hero! That was not a conflict, it was a war. Your brother did not run, he did his duty and fought in that war! I think because the US pulled out, its not talked about. Vietnam was a war! I think, if my history is right, the US took over after the French gave up? Do they call it a war I wonder? What is now going on in Iraq? Another war,I think the president a little while back said the war or combat was over on a aircraft carrier! Still war is going on over there! Hell yes your brother fought in a war, he is a hero! Good poem!

That was great! My teacher taught us about Vietnam, she said people didn't appreciate it very much, but I think anybody who fights for what they beleive is a hero. Great job!

It's different!

but hey its sweet in a kind of way I suppose.

It made me think about vietnam and I know what you mean about people saying it wasn't a war.

You're poem is worded in a very factual manner

Don't mind the first answer, people here can be rude sometimes.

There's no poetry in it, it's just truncated sentences. I don't feel any mood or atmosphere has been created by your use of language. Sorry.
