i bought a ticket from United. wanted to book online, but i couldn't. so i went down to the office and paid cash. forgot to ask them about travel insurance though.

You would have paid extra for it (you can add it) .. you should call United and check before doing anything though:

The airlines do not include the travel insurance. You will have to buy them separately and you can get it at the atm like machines at the airport. The insurance is mostly issued by Mutual of Omaha.

You are not insured. You can book insurance through United or you can go to any of dozens of Travel insurance companies. Usually inexpensive and easy to do over the net. good luck . Call your airline and ask. They are usually helpful and it is probably easier than looking through the on line stuff.

No airline ticket includes insurance. Major airports have kiosk machines where it can be purchased.
