I have a sneaky suspicion that it is only based on what they believe (which it shouldn't be really), but perhaps it is other things as well, like the strength of the argument or the benevolency of the answer; but I'm sure sometimes people are just jerks. What do you think?

I personally feel they do not venture as far as to "use personal guidelines". Mostly, people just climb on the bandwagon and if someone has seven thumbs up, they add another without reading the complete answer. And yes, disagreement is also supposed to be an acceptable reason. :P

I give thumbs up when: someone makes a humorous remark that is funny and appropriate, if they give a thorough and informative answer, if they use good judgement and discernment in answering.

I give thumbs down if the answerer: is rude when it isn't called for, is racist, sexist etc etc, gives incorrect facts, makes inappropriate jokes, appears to be a sexual predator, makes sweeping generalisations.....you get the drift?

I don't use the thumbs up/down to attack someones personal beliefs. I use it too show how I feel about the accuracy and intent of what they said.

The blocking/reporting/thumbs functions are greatly abused on this forum.

because the answers don't agree with what they think and believe in that's why they give thumbs down. I am too lazy to give thumbs down.

If you bash my religion, I will give you a thumbs down.

If you spread lies about my religion, I will give you a thumbs down.

If you refuse to find out firsthand what my religion teaches and instead rely on news reports, I will give you a thumbs down.

If you presume to know better than I who or what I worship, I will give you a thumbs down.

If you present accurate information about my religion, even if you don't believe it, I will give you a thumbs up.

I am sparing with my thumbs and give up's when an answer makes me laugh, and down when the answer is offensive.
