Thanks for the open ended question, so we'll just assume you are talking about a brand new 2007 model with all the available options. In that case the Altima is about $1500 cheaper then a Maxima but you'll see alot more of them on the road. Both cars are very reliable and have the awesome 3.5 V6 engine with 255 + HP. I'd rather pay a tad more for the slightly better in every way Maxima, but that's no slight on the Altima which is a great car too.
The only way to know is what is your budget and take both for a test drive.

The Nissan maxima and altima are great cars the biggest difference between them is the price. The maxima you can only get as a v6 and the altima you can get as a 4cylinder,v6 or a hybrid.both cars are pretty roomy and they both come with more standard features then most of their competitors. But you will most likely see more altimas on the road then maximas just because of the price. If you end up going with the v6 engine in either one you will get the Nissan 3.5 v6 which is one of the top ten engines in the world for about 13 to 14 years in a row.How ever the only thing is you have to put octane 93 on the v6 which is fine because putting octane 87 is like putting pretty much nothing in your car it wont give you good gas mileage. I only know this because I have an 03 maixma and I put the octane 93 and I get about 25 mpg in town and about 35 on highway.Which ever way you go you wont be sorry they are both great cars that will last you a long time I should know mine has 137,000 miles and no problems at all.Hope this helps

I drive the '05 Altima -- GREAT CAR (especially for the price). I think they are BOTH just awesome cars. The Maxima is like the upgrade of the Altima & it is a little bigger car. If you are thinking practical ($$ wise) then go w/ the Altima, but if you can afford to splurge by all means go w/ the Maxima. In the end you can't go wrong w/ either one!!!

My fiance own a 2002 Altima and so far so good. It has proven to be a trustworthy and reliable car but the Maxima is their top of the line sedan and very very very reliable. His grandparents as well as an uncle of mine own one and they're very happy with the Maxima. However, I believe the Maxima requires premium fuel. You might want to check on that. Good luck!
