Winter is normally cooler (relatively speaking) but sometimes it will rain beyond the normal morning showers over the moutains.

I normally recommend February-April timeframe.

Its a good month if you want to get away from the crowds. The summer months are terrible because Hawaii is full of school kids and families with kids. I heard once that a trip to Hawaii is the number one graduation present for kids in California

If you want to see huge surf, as in waves over 10 feet high, that is the time to go. It really is amazing to see.

Just be careful. When I was here once in January, I ran onto a beach so that my wife could get a nice picture. Then the wave came in, and I went from standing on sand to being in water well over my head. Then the wave went out, pulling me with it, the nastiest undertow I've ever experienced. If this happens to you, and you don't know how to deal with rip tides, you are in serious trouble.

I think April to May is the best, because the weather is nice and it's not as crowded because summer vacation hasn't arrived yet. Jan is a bit cooler and sometimes have more rain.
