My sis was recently hospitalized for a mystery kidney condition (never did determine if it was a stone, an infection, or???), and they also provided here with a heavy dose of Vicodin, because the kidney condition had been so extremly painful initially. Like you experienced, it basically knocked her out for half a day when she took it, so she switched to tylenol instead, unless she was in so much pain that she wanted to be out.
If Tylenol doesn't cut it for you (and if you ask your doc, he'll write you an Rx for prescription-strength Tylenol), try cutting the Vicodin in half. I'm sure if you check your prescription it says "take as needed for pain", and obviously a whole one is more than you need.
Also-- be aware that some people find Vicodin to be extremely constipating (effect of the hydrocodone)

Well it is a really strong pain killer and probably will put you to sleep as it will help ease the pain, maybe you should take half the dosage, maybe cut the pill in half. Everyone has different effects. Your GP/chemist should have told you that it may be a side effect. Too much advil might put a strain on your body as well, because takin pain killers means it has to be put into your system, much like drinking or takin drugs. so it would be best to contact a Dr/nurse/pharmacist or just somone in the medical field on the best options. A hotwater bottle over the aching area may help ease the pain a little.
I hope you feel better soon.

Vicodin has acetaminophen (Tylenol) and codeine in it. It is the same thing as a hydrocodine. Don't take it if your not hurting too bad. A friend of mine couldn't take it after a wreck. It made him feel too loopy. That & the sleepiness are normal. Remember, this is a narcotic pain medicine. It will have a bigger punch .

Vicodin is an excellent pain reliever. It can make you drowsy and even make you fall asleep. Call the physician who prescribed the Vicodin and tell him/her that you had a strong reaction to it. Perhaps you require a lower dose; or he/she might suggest something else instead.

Vicodin is Hydrocodone and tylenol. Hydrocodone is synthesized opium. It is a narcotic. By definition a narcotic is anything that will induce sleep, relieve pain and alter the psyche. If you want, you can take a half a tablet instead of one.
