I've said it before, but it bears repeating,
I don't believe in Mermaids but I don't spend countless hours trying to disprove it Because I know they are fairy tales,I could care less.
So if you are really set free liberated from religion and God MOVE ON.
Why waste your time?
You certainly will never convert or change a true Christains relationship with God because they know he is real.
I don't mean this sarcastic it just amazes me the wasted time and energy.

Seriously? Because I think it is the single most important problem with the world today that I could have any hope of improving significantly. There are much more capable people than me working on the hard sciences and more charismatic people serving in political office. Most true change will come from these two arenas. All we can really do as citizens is educate one another on the simpler problems of living, and be helpful to those near us. Wiser citizens will elect wiser politicians, and that is what we have desperately been needing these past 6 1/2 years.

I'm not going to go into a full explanation of the pathways of the harm that Christianity causes. This is not the place for a dissertation. Put simply, Christianity is not true and it corrupts peoples' motives for doing almost anything. People end up living for an imaginary being instead of for themselves and the people around them. People end up living for an imaginary utopia instead of seeing what they can do about creating a utopia here on Earth. And perhaps worst of all, people spread these lies and even make life harder for those of us who don't fall victim to them.

Edit: no, that isn't the worst of all. The worst is that people fail to see the true beauty of nature in all its glory. (I almost said "her glory", but isn't that where we went wrong in the first place? By letting a catchy metaphor get out of hand?)

And why do you exaggerate to make the point, thereby invalidating your question? This would be objected to in a court of law as assuming facts not in evidence.

I doubt that anyone, atheist or agnostic, spends "every waking hour" trying to discredit God. In fact, atheists are NOT trying to discredit a god they do not believe exists. They may spend time discrediting the concept that God exists, but that is not inconsistent with their belief.

It's like someone saying Santa is a dirty old man who feels up small children. What they mean is that old men who take the job of Santa in the mall may be such a person.

Atheists who spend time here are not really all that hopeful of converting Christians who are firm in their belief. They may hope to "convert" someone who is feeling bad about the Christianity they were taught as a child, but afraid to leave it on the Pascal's wager theory: the idea that "just in case" it is true they are hedging their bets. What eventually happens is that they realize this is sapping their energy, and they must decide. If they cannot believe, they need not feel guilty about the fact that they cannot.

Believe me, it happens to enough people that it is a kindness to present them with alternatives. I'm not an atheist, I'm a pagan, but I think presenting atheism as an alternative is a kindness, too.

Because they're dangerous. Religion has caused more war and genocide than any other factor. They yell at people and threaten people and brainwash the young generation and are just generally hateful.

I don't see legions of mermaid believers doing things like that.

Furthermore, most of it is self-defense. They attack US.

We may not change their minds, but fence sitters will see our posts and they just stop and think a little bit, and come to the conclusion that religion is a social disease.

I don't. Yes, an actual atheist who doesn't get in arguements with strangers, and calls them all idiots. And I still don't understand why people spend their every waking moment believing in somehing that they might know for sure. I think if people saw religion as more a theory than a way of life, everyone would be happy.

While .... for one thing, you do not have people coming to preach to you about mermaids and you have to believe in them or else you will be suffering with the lack of oxygen AFTER you died, do you?

You do, however, get pesky christians who virtually breathe down your neck and trying to shove what he/she thinks down into your throat, don't you.

Now you see the difference? You can think all your imaginary master as the real thing for all I care, but if you try to push it down onto others, do you think I should retaliate or should I just accept it? If you think I should just accept it, should you not just accept the fact your god is false.

Pretending not to notice the bad behavior of Christians undermines your message, hon. If you can't be even the slightest bit honest about this, why should anyone take you seriously?

Try this again without the dishonesty.

I'm an Atheist and proud of it, i never argue a persons on it either, each to their own i say and i respect their views. but what you state here really gets my goat, who are you to say move on. you strike me as a person who doesn't respect others point of view and i bet you argue about it a lot. I think you should get of your high horse and respect people for their beliefs or non beliefs in a religion. you should be the one to move on and concentrate on your Bibles teachings, one of the 10 commandments "love thy neighbour"

I reiterate, it's because of the actions of it's followers that people try to discredit that thing--you blissfully ignore this same response the hundred of times it's posted on here, why do you keep wasting the time and energy to ask?

Because those people have a longing in their heart and rather than accept the longing or even analyze what it may be, they discredit God and His believers. It is like how when you were in school and some kids had something you wanted. Rather than become jealous of those kids you found something to make fun of them for, rather than admitting or even accepting that you wanted what they had. Plus isn't in the Bible, where even Jesus knows that not everyone will turn to Him, unfortunately.
