Soorat Al Baqara

2:219] They ask you about intoxicants and gambling: say, "In them there is a gross sin, and some benefits for the people. But their sinfulness far outweighs their benefit." They also ask you what to give to charity: say, "The excess." GOD thus clarifies the revelations for you, that you may reflect,

Soorat Al Ma'idah

[5:90] O you who believe, intoxicants, and gambling, and the altars of idols, and the games of chance are abominations of the devil; you shall avoid them, that you may succeed.
[5:91] The devil wants to provoke animosity and hatred among you through intoxicants and gambling, and to distract you from remembering GOD, and from observing the Contact Prayers (Salat). Will you then refrain?

There are 3 ayats in the Quran that refer to alcohol.

Nisa 43 Oh ye who believe, draw not near to prayer when ye are in a drunken state, until ye know that which ye utters....

Ma'idah 90 O ye who believe, strong drink and games of chance and idols and diving arrows are only a distraction from Satan. Leave it aside in order that ye may suceed.

91: Satan seeks only to cast among you enmity and hatred by means of strong drink and games of chance and to turn you from the rememberance of Allah and from his worship. Will ye then pay attention?

Baqarah 219: They question thee about strong drink and games of chance. Say: In both is a great sin and some utility for men; but the sin of them is greater than the their usefulness.....

All of these ayats refer to alcohol as being something we should avoid because its very well known that alcohol is harmful and causes disease to the self and harm or even death to those we affect in a drunken state.

The interesting thing to note here is that God uses the word Haram when indicating something is absolutely forbidden to us and also tells us what the punishment will be if we do that haram deed...however, in the verses containing alcohol. God says its harmful to us and we should avoid it but the word haram is not used in absolutely forbidding it to us and there is no punishment prescribed if we do use it. God even says there is some harm and some benefit and to stay away from the harmful aspect of it...we all know that a certain amount of alcohol is seen as beneficial in the use of medicines etc so that would probably be why its use is not absolutely forbidden to us. Muslims will say its haram for us to use alcohol in any way shape or form but I say if God didnt use the word haram how can we insist thats what he meant? He used it every other place he meant to...why not in those verses? Just a thought.
