If the answer is yes: which it probably is I feel screwed, You name the medication : I have taken it. The only thing that helps is Xanax to curb my anxiety & help me sleep. All SSRI's & anti whatever's worked to little or no avail & gave me bad side effects. I'm unemployed, living with my parents & getting help in TX w/o money (having to go thru state social services) is like trying to get from a water spout. Even Dr's are frustrated with me. I know nothing is hopeless but I feel like it is. I also have physical ailments & I can never tell if they;re related to my disorder or if I'm really sick. I.E. sometimes I get violently sick to my stomach & I can't tell if it's from stress or if I have a stomach flu.

FYI: I'm broke: hence I can't afford DBT & yes I have seen several Dr's & I'm in the process of switching right now & it's a lot of red tape, waiting, phone calls, paperwork & I hate it.

You have been through the ringer, and this is not fun. But, it is important to continue receiving mental health services.
It is not uncommon to have a dual diagnosis. It also takes time to get the right doctors and therapists working with you. Just don't give up, whatever you do.
Best wishes to you.

Yes, it is possible to have both disorders. There is a lot more to diagnosing either disorder than what you have described. If you are feeling ill and have had medication adjustments, maybe you are experiencing side effects? You could also be developing an addiction to Xanax and withdrawal from that medication can cause vomitting, among other things. Xanax is highly addictive and is not always the best option. Have you seen a psychiatrist about these questions? If not, it would be best to consult one before coming up with your own diagnosis. Also, one thing that gets overlooked frequently is thyroid function problems. Have you had your levels checked recently? Having your hormones out of whack can cause many of the same symptoms as bipolar disorder and can also cause anxiety and/or depression.
Good luck,
Erica

Sure, it's possible to have a dual diagnosis. You certainly don't treat them both with the same medications. Bipolar disorders are treated fairly effectively with medication. BPD is something else entirely. You do not mention any symptoms associated with BPD. (Except for asking for help and attention in a public forum, perhaps). I assume you have been diagnosed with BPD, and therefore you have probably been told by your therapist that you are pretty much in control of your own destiny with BPD. It is a PERSONALITY disorder. You have the power to change it. You have the power to make decisions that are healthy, and the power to fight unhealthy ones (like cutting, manipulating). I have always thought of BPD as a "I hate you, don't leave me" sort of disorder. You have to eventually decide whether or not you want to lose everyone in your life. Whether it is worth the thrill of being decietful and manipulating people. When/if you decide it is not, you will begin to make progress. You have to take baby steps in recovery. Start doing the right thing. I know how hard it is for people with personality disorders to change, but they can. . .I have seen it. Keep trying not to lose hope. Stay on your medications for your bipolar disorder, even if you think they are not working. You CAN fight this battle and win, but you have to be all in. You can find support groups (online and in your community) to help you reform and stick to your goals....I hope you do. Best of luck.

Yes, you can have both, it happens.
Another person with BPD saying "I tried everything" and saying "give me that habit forming drug (like Xanax or Valium)" "none of the other ones work."
Sorry, I don't doubt that you are suffering, but it sure sounds like you might be trying to manipulate your doctors.
Yes, doctors and other mental health professionals often get frustrated with patients who had BPD.
Sorry, but if you "tried everything" I have to think you didn't really give the medication a chance to work. DId you take them every day for at least four weeks? That's how long it takes for medication to start working in most cases.
Try to learn to have a little more faith and patience with the people who are trying to help you; I know that is very difficult for you, but it's the only way you will get any real help.

Yes, you can have both. With how they diagnose mental disorders, bipolar disorder is an Axis I diagnosis, which is for mental illnessness, and borderline is Axis II, which is personality disorders. Have you tried DBT? It's the only type of therapy shown to help both those conditions. It basically teaches you to be more aware of your emotions to help control them. However, with bipolar medication is the only fully functional treatment.

Yes. See stress, and bipolar disorder, at http://www.ezy-build.net.nz/~shaneris on pages 7, and 5, and BPD, at the foot of page 1. Read page 2.

yes it is possible as i have the same diagnosis. i have been through about everything you describe here and i am so frustrated and you know what happens then.
my doc has prescribed 2mg of klonipin instead of xanax which i think is better for me but as far as meds go i've tried them all and if they work for a week i'm lucky.
i feel screwed to as the mental health center here doesn't know what to do with me. i'm ready to toss in the towel and if it weren't for my dog i would.
no one can imagine what it is like to live this way.
Good Luck to you.
