I have been walking a lot lately for excercise. I have notice the muscles in my legs cramp up every now and then. Do I need to stretch more? Any suggestions?

Potassium will ease your cramps.

Muscle cramps from exercise are caused by a buildup of lactic acid from rapid and continued muscle contraction. As your muscles grow to adapt to this new pattern of exercise, eat a banana after you walk. Bananas are high in potassium.

Another great common aide to your health is a daily vitamin tailored to your age group and gender. And drink lots of powerade or gatorade (gatorade is slightly better suited for you), not water. Water only replaces fluid, gatorade will replace the necessary electrolytes that you lose as you sweat.

Stretching wouldn't hurt either.

Oh, and good for you! More people need to take a little time each day and get some exercise. It will make you feel loads better, and keep you healthy for years to come!!

Good Luck and Good Health!!!

Stretch before and after exercise.
Also, remember to warm up and cool down before and after exercise, which should take about 15 min each. This helps your muscles and heart!
After exercising, rinse off in a shower real quick, and then take a hot bath with sea salt or mineral salt at least. Then take an actual shower, to wash off bacteria and wash your hair and do other stuff (aka shave legs or whatever).
Remember to breath when stretching and exercising, the more oxygen you bring in the less likely cramping will occur!
Try "The Art of Breathing" in Chi or Chi Kung.
Try to eat more potassium (like bananas or seaweed).

Also make sure you are getting enough Zinc and Salt (sodium) in your diet. A deficiency in those can cause cramping as well.

Also remember to drink plenty of water before you exercise, water also carries oxygen and it hydrates you. Once you feel thirsty, you are already dehydrated! So every 15 min fill up during your exercise, to replenish what you sweated out. Plenty of water intake should help as well ;-)

A bit of stretching, but not a whole lot is needed for walking. Start slow and work up to fast and when you are nearly finished slow back down. Going from 0 to 100 then back down to 0 causes blood to pool, which in turn causes cramps to form and muscles to tighten.

Hope this helps,
Brandi
