I wouldn't suggest barbiturates right off the bat, because they can have side effects that are not desirable, like ironically not being able to sleep.
do you get a good amount of exercise everyday?
Also trying to get to sleep in bed all night is not that great, I read on a website about sleep aids (ambien i think, not sure) that you should get up and do something else if in about 30 mins you haven't fallen asleep. It also helps not to do things during the day in bed so much, like reading, etc. Your body gets "conditioned" to feel ready to sleep when in bed.
ok some other things i have found out, don't spend too much time on the computer, watching tv before bed, or probably in bright lights, your body still thinks it's daylight and therefore may attribute to the sleep problem.
granted, these are things to try, to rule out insomnia, if at all possible, because pills are not as desirable as one would think
another thing might be racing thoughts, do you have problems with anxiety? that is a matter one should take up with a physician though, because medicines such as Xanax are not that great (i.e. - side effects: memory loss, among some...)
I suggest at most to talk to a doctor about this, and consider the options to find what's best for you, and to stress again, don't be so quick to get hooked on a barbiturate. Good luck

1st step - never drink caffeine within 8 hours prior to sleep
2nd step - don't lay awake for more than 15 minutes at a time, if you have been laying in bed for 15 minutes get up go to the kitchen sip some water, maybe watch 5 minutes of tv or read a few pages of a book in the living room, then try again.
3rd step - relax your entire body, taking deep breaths and concentrating on relaxing absolutely every muscle in your body can help you sleep, but again only try this for 15 minutes.
4th step - warm milk can work wonders
Also, why no pills? I understand a lot of people are not a fan of drugs, but over the counter can work wonders. I was the same as you and wouldnt even take a tylenol for almost 10 years due to my hate of drugs, however lack of proper sleep can have more severe adverse affects on your health than pills. Just try a no-name over the counter from Shopper's, such as Life brand
Life brand sleep aid is a 50mg Diphenhydramine Hydrochloride capsule, which works me wonders. Just dont rely on it every night. I take one once every week to 4 weeks, just when I have had too many problems sleeping and badly need a good nights sleep. Allow yourself a minimum of 8 hours for slepp, though I recommend 10-12.

This method practically has cured me after many many years.. Is a twist on reading books. Do puzzles - I do Sudoku. The problem I had is that no matter how tired I was the thoughts in my brain would not shut down. The pattern of "puzzle treatment" went like this: I would only do the puzzles when I went bed, so that my brain would associate them with bed. At first I had to do the puzzles for a long time before I could sleep, 2 or 3 hours. I would do them until I fell asleep with the light on and the puzzlebook in my hand. After a couple (or maybe few?) days I tried turning off the light. At first I would have to turn the light back on and start with the puzzles again, but after only a couple/few days of this, I started being able to fall asleep with the light off. Evently, but not before too long, my brain was getting retrained and I could fall asleep much sooner than ever in my life. It was just a case of retraining my brain.

Insomnia sucks, thats for sure.
I suffered insomia for years. I really tried everything from noise reduction to sleeping pills.
One thing however that really worked for me was this product. I'm sleeping so much better now. I highly recommended if you have trouble sleeping. It's called Natural Sleep Secrets.
Worked wonders for me. It might not work for everyone, but it sure is worth a try. Sleep is indeed very important.

hey i have the same problem and not even 2 minutes ago, did i post the same question. well, anyways, what i do sometimes, is play a video game (like tetris on my cell phone) in bed to clear my mind, tire my arms, and eyes to help me get tired faster. Or you can read a book (like my english homework-10 pages of prefixes, suffixes, and roots, or write, something that doesn't involve bright lights (like me typing on my labtop when i really should be in bed lol)

Have you tried a Yahoo search for insomnia + "natural remedies" (OR "natural cures" OR "natural treatments")?
