Most of this prayer is describing praise of, and requests to, God. What is the only descriptive action for us - and why is this important?

"as we forgive those that trespass against us" suggests that we should indeed be forgiving. Unforgiveness allows a person to grow into a very bitter, lonely, unhappy, unpleasant, cynical, jaded person. Not only is that a fun way to live, but it adds negative energies to our whole world, our universe and effects more than we can imagine.

If you're asking from a Christian viewpoint, the most important tenant, the very basis, of Christianity, and certainly important in many other religions besides, is forgiveness.

If you're asking from another perspective, still forgiveness makes sense and is a wise choice.

Btw, forgiving someone does not mean you have to excuse their actions. They are still accountable and you don't have to be a doormat in the name of forgiveness.

Hope this has helped, Lili

Well, we have to forgive those who sin against us. This is important because forgiveness is a facet of the Christian faith, and one that I feel many people choose to ignore. The world would be much more tolerant and pleasant if Christians (myself included) would do the one thing we're told, rather than focusing on the things we're asking God to do. Why do you ask? Did I just write your essay for you or something?

Forgiveness is vital--unforgiving and holding a grudge can destroy you physically and spiritually. I saw this happen over a period of twenty years in my own family when my brother became bitter over a supposed problem with a family member and it caused a rift in the family. I saw my brother twenty years later. He is my younger brother but his bitterness had made him look many years older than I. He had also lost his faith through his bitterness.

Jesus gave us the example of the parable of the young man who asked forgiveness of his debt from his creditor but then would not in turn forgive someone else. His debt and punishment was reinstated.

We are told that God will forgive whom He forgives, but it is for us to forgive all men. Jesus also answered when asked how many times we needed to forgive. Jesus said seventy times seven.

Forgiving those that do us wrong.

This is important because none of us are perfect. If we ask God for forgiveness for our mistakes, and we know Jehovah will forgive us if we are truly repentant, then we must likewise forgive our fellow man for the sins they may do to us.

How can we expect God to forgive us if we cannot forgive others?

there are many, not just one. First we have to bless his name, then ask for his kingdom to come above all other things, give thanks for what we recieve everyday and ask for forgiveness, and last, ask for protection against the wicked one. I'm confused. Which IS the one thing?
