The "right" way is to back up your data, and then format the hard drive completely. Your setup probably failed when it tried converting your FAT32 partition to NTFS. Clean installs are always better than upgrades.

P.S. If you didn't back up your data, it is probably cooked. You might as format your hard drive and do it right, anyway.

If you get a blue screen, try this:

1. Save anything you want to have. SAVE IT, do NOT skip this step!
2. Do the upgrade, but when asked for a serial number, do NOT put anything in. This allows the upgrade to install Vista as an evaluation copy.
3. Finish the upgrade. If you get your data from 98, great! Otherwise keep going.
4. Upgrade again, this time enter the serial number. This makes Vista a real copy.
5. Load your saved data (assuming it was not saved in the upgrade).

Good luck.
