You could just nicely say it represents your religion, which is personal and not a matter you wish to discuss.

I do not see why you have to wear a pentacle to prove who you are, as long as you know that is enough isn't it the case?
When people wear anything that reflects their religion per say, any religion or way of life for example, they have to be prepared to answer a few questions along the way. So I would think if you do not want to be bothered, then just don't wear it.
Being a Pagan is about connecting to our mother Earth, not about a religion, you have to remember that back in the days (loooong time ago ;) it was not seen as a religion but as a way of being :)

I wear a pentacle ring on my right hand and a triquetra on my left. IF people notice/ask about them, I simply tell them that I am a Witchcraft Practitionor. Some ask question, but most don't. Do what you feel most comfortable doing. If you don't want to give out info, then don't, but I've found, more often than not, people are interested in how I got into it. I don't see a problem educating people if they want to know. The more people know, the more tolerance and acceptance there is, right?

You should of course say whatever you feel comfortable with.I usually say "Well i am a Wiccan, which is a nature based religion and this is one of our many symbols, much like the christian cross. The points on this one stand for air water fire and earth while the circle represents spirit"
That usually shuts them up, but occasionally i get someone wanting more details, if i know them i will offer them the use of one of my books if not i will give them a name of a website i like.
I hope soon you will feel confident enough to wear it with pride.
Blessed Be!

Only you can decide your own comfort level with this.
My best advice would be to know, yourself, why it is that you want to wear it so that it can be seen, and how you will respond, remembering that if you're abrasive, snappy, or defensive that you'll be doing a disservice to all of us.
You may be the only Pagan the check-out person ever meets.

Whenever someone asks me when I am wearing a Buddhist symbol, they are usually genuinely interested. So I just answer I am a Buddhist and this is Om, Kwan Yin, mala beads, whatever. 95% of the time they are very polite. If they act beligerant or begin trying to "save" me, well it's better that I learn how they are before I waste too much time getting to know them.

unless a person is genuinely interested and you have time to explain in full, just tell them it is a symbol of your beliefs and represents the 4 elements - if they look puzzled, say, 'you know, the air, earth etc?'
if anyone mentions satan smile politely and tell them you don't even believe in him, never mind worship him and you instead respect nature.
that should be quite enough info for the checkout person, or someone in a queue etc!
wear it with pride in a quiet manner and good luck!
blessed be

i wear mine all the time, i also have a pentacle tattooed on my arm. as far as explaining it, it depends on who is asking. for some, if i feel like having such a descusion, i will tell them exactly what it is. for others i will simply tell them its a star. it really just depends on what mood i am in and how i feel about the person asking. you could always go with a longer chain and that way if you feel like showing it you can, if not you can tuck it into your shirt.

I would say bugger off I wear what I want, and I wanted to wear my religions symbol. If it is a person who wears a cross just say what is the cross, a symbol of your religion? The thing I wear is the symbol of my religion.

I agree that the thing to say is that it a symbol of your religion. That is a direct and respectful answer.
