When in Turkey, do what the Turkish do...it's the only way to survive. Essentially it's every man or woman for him or herself there. And remember, you'll be dealing with a lot of tight squeezes, one-way streets, and sinuous, poorly lit roads (especially if you're going in the old parts of cities such as Istanbul). Oh and speed limits, pedestrian crossings, and streetlights are just suggestions. The good news is that I didn't experience any "road rage" even when the traffic was abominable...they are obviously used to it and seem to have accepted that that's the way things are.

You should take particular care when travelling by road throughout Turkey, as road conditions and driving standards can be poor. Serious traffic accidents are common particularly at night.

If you wish to drive in Turkey, you are required to carry either an International Driving License issued in the UK or a notarised copy, in Turkish, of your Driving License. Please note provisional driving licences are not recognised. An 'A' category standard motorcycle licence is required to hire motorcycles over 50cc in Turkey. An 'A1' category 'light motorcycle' driving licence is only suitable for motorcycles below 50cc. It is against the law not to wear a helmet.

Contravention of the above could result in a heavy fine.

Do not drink and drive. The Police will breathalyse drunk drivers, fine them on the spot (currently 448 YTL) and immediately confiscate their licence for six months.

It's like driving on the same road with the devil. Turkey isn't exactly the most road safe country in the world, so you'll have to be careful.

Lots of drivers donot follow traffic rules. It's bad. Especially in summer, when the heat makes people crazy.

It is dangerous. Unfortunately the traffic rules are not very well obeyed.

You need to drive with a defensive manner, as one of my foreign friends put it.

I was really scared! Local drivers were not respecting us at all, and those roads that have a common lane shared for both directions, in order to overpass, are just so dangerous!

It is like sex, nice but dangerous. Protect yourself. Rape is possible :)
