Proper assembly will mean the difference between safe riding and the possibility of severe injury. If you are not sure, I would suggest taking to a bike shop. It might cost a little money and time, but if it keeps you from getting hurt that is money well spent.

Typically a bike like yours comes mostly preassembled in a box. The only thing to do is put the stem into the head tube and tighten it. In order to do this you will need either a hex wrench or an adjustable wrench, depending on the type of bolt head on the top of the stem. Put the stem in at a level that keeps you upright when riding, not slouched over too much and then tighten. This should be done after the seat is adjusted to a level that allows you to pedal the bike without rocking your hips and your knee is bent when your foot is at the bottom of a pedal stroke. You may need to adjust both of these things a few times before you get it just right. Never forget your friendly neighborhood bike shop is always available when you run into trouble. Doing all of this work incorrectly could cause pain while riding and may cause a crash if the handlebars or seat slip.

I just finished assembling this very bike. Yes, to assemble front stem and handlebars you need a hex wrench of the right size. You then need to go over the entire bike, check all fasteners for tightness, lube where necessary, etc. You'll also need to inflate the tires to 40 psi or so. It's true: if this is too much for you, get a pro to do it.

I have to be honest with you. If you don't know the answer to these questions without consulting us, you really should not be assembling a bicycle. I suspect this bike is for your child. his or her safety depends on proper assembly of the bike. Please bring it to a bike shop and get their help. I don't want to see anybody get hurt for no reason.
