Riesling is a white grape
The most expensive wines made from Riesling are late harvest dessert wines, produced by letting the grapes hang on the vines well past normal picking time.
These concentrated wines have more sugar (in extreme cases hundreds of grams per litre), more acid (to give balance to all the sugar), more flavor, and more complexity.
These elements combine to make wines which are amongst the most long lived of all white wines. The beneficial use of "noble rot" was discovered in the late 18th century at Schloss Johannisberg.

it has a broad range of aromatics from of petroleum (diesel fuel) to floral-perfumey. The flavors can also range from fruity, rich, miner-ally, to an almost savory salty flavor. The late harvest wines are very honeyed sweet and super-rich! It largely depends on where it was grown, how ripe the grapes are at harvest, and what the wine maker chooses to do with them during production. On unifying principal of good Riesling is a bracing acidity. The new world wines tend to miss out on this wonderful component compared to a colder growing climate such as German, Austria, and Alsace (France).
I love the stuff and it is a great wine to experiment with different food pairings. Try a sweeter style wine with spicy Thai, Vietnamese, or Indian food.
I also enjoy a very rich, dry Riesling such as an Austrian wine, with Beef.
