I think the front end of a job is a more difficult decision. It certainly is more life changing and has long term effects.
Which job to take - because that will effect your career in terms of where u are going, how stable the job is, the current and future increases u can expect, your advancement potential inside and outside the company.
Which person to hire - because that will effect your career, your business, your other staff, etc.
Quitting and firing are easy. Once done it is over.

The first big one was to begin my career as a self employed IT consultant and Internet Marketer back in 1999. It's had a lot of ups and downs and taking the leap was scary, awesome, humbling, etc...however I'd never change my decision. It's been an amazing ride.
This decision came after having spent 12+ years in the US Air Force as a computer geek/management staff schlep so I was giving up a good chunk of security.

So...which is it? An interview coming up or one you already had?
Whether or not the person that I was training (the one in the answer below) was worth retraining all the time or if we should replace her or perhaps just shift some of her workload onto the other two in the team (they would have been fine with the extra, especially since she wasn't carrying a heavy load herself). I decided to exercise a lot of patience and forgiveness and continue to coach her.
She finally figured out the reports. She even got them to me most of the time ON TIME...wow. LOL. I'm glad we kept her on because she's a sweet girl & will really go places if she chooses to.

I passed up a great promotion in the hills of Arkansas. I saw how much my wife would miss her family. Further I did not want my kids growing up to be mountain men. I took a less desirable job.
