I've read that mixing iodine and epsom salt with boiling water, then dabbing it on with a cotton ball will help get rid of blackheads. Has anyone tried it and had good results?

Not sure about the iodine but the epsom salts or rok salt with a few drops of tea tree oil works pretty well. It can be used in the shower as a scrub or with a cotton ball.

I'm not sure this is a good idea but I may be misinformed. The reason I say this is that unless there is a chemical reaction that gives you a color change when you mix the two, then you will stain your skin with iodine.

It also sounds very harsh, again, unless there is a chemical reaction that calms them down.

What I would do is begin by washing your face with a gentle cleanser that is right for your skin type. Maybe soap and water, maybe a foaming cream cleanser, maybe cold cream or Noxzema, maybe something like Cetaphil. Rinse thoroughly.

Then tent your head over the bathroom sink with a bath towel, and run the hot water to steam the blackheads for a few minutes. This will open your pores and loosen the plug so to speak. Then very gently see if you can squeeze them out. If you do it right, it is almost painless and you don't have to hurt yourself and run risk of creating a real zit with pus and infection. Don't work on one place too long, and don't squeeze them after your skin cools back down because your pores will be closing...giving a smaller hole for the plug to release from. So after a minute or less, give it a rest and try again another time.

Immediately after squeezing them out you need an astringent...which is nothing more than something that closes the pores back up. For the least problem, just use cool water. If you need a chemical...try some witch hazel on a water soaked cotton ball.

For really cheap and helpful chemicals for your face...

You can exfoliate with a gentle baking soda paste. The more water the less abrasive it will be. The baking soda will be a very gentle abrasive physically speaking, but chemically it softens and conditions the skin.

You can dab rubbing alcohol, peroxide, or tea tree oil on your skin for genuine pimples.
