Most people mean they pity the person when they say this; because they are arrogant enough to be sure that their choice is the right one and if the person does not agree with them, then the person is wrong and doomed or stupid or something.

I don't pity the people who don't agree with me because it is a waste of time. I may think that some choices are ignorant, but everyone is entitled to their own belief and I would not try to change them; not that that would be possible, anymore than they could change my belief.

Religion is one of the more ridiculous things to argue about for this reason and usually the people who argue the most are the ones who are trying to force their belief on others.

There are many questions to which I do not respond because I can tell the asker isn't really seeking information, just confirmation that they are right from like minded people.

Why do I say that I pity someone when they have turned to religion? I hate to see someone waste the one and only life they have. They strive for something in the next life, when they could be doing so much good in this one. It is a waste. By the way, atheism isn't a belief but a lack of one. We are not making the claim that their isn't a god. We are only making the statement that the evidence we have seen leads us to the conclusion that there isn't a god. These are totally different things. Religion is a personal choice and people should keep it personal but you see, most religious people don't. When they vote a certain way because of their religious morals, it influences laws. Laws I have to follow. Laws that say gays cannot marry. Laws that say women cannot get abortions. Laws that say if I am dying of terminal cancer, I cannot choose to die with dignity by terminating my own life. So you see, it might be a personal choice, but it doesn't stay personal very long and as long as it effects me and my family in a negative way, I will continue to fight for the end of religion. That is my personal choice!

Those who believe in God will feel a great sadness if they think someone else is lost. Not because they just want to be right...but because they don't want anyone to suffer a fate worse than death. They see the other person through the eyes of God.

And, some are just caught up in a religion rather than a personal relationship with God and simply want to convince others to believe as they do. They are not speaking out of love in this case...but out of self righteousness...which by the way...is a sin.

We pity people, for whatever reasons, justified or not, all the time.

It's human nature. I pity the religious because I think they're leading lives filled with lies. The religious pity me because they believe I am missing out on god.

It's human nature. We may not enjoy the pity of others, but it's better than their outright hate. Pity is what we have for someone when we don't wish them ill, yet feel they could be happier.

People say that because they are ignorant and sometimes not secure in their own knowledge of their faith. Just because you don't agree or believe with someones religion doesn't mean it's ok to judge another. To profess that you believe in any religion you must also believe in yourself. Because it takes strength, courage and wisdom to not only believe in it but to POSITIVELY explain your beliefs. Not Justify but educate in a peaceful fashion.

Actually you are indoctrinated into religion and rarely ever is it a choice.

It's atheism, no capital letters and the same as theism but with an a in front of it.

if someone has a different belief than you, then they believe that your faith/religion is wrong.
if you truly have faith in your god/idea, then why wouldn't you try to bring everyone who disagrees to your faith? isn't that what your god would want?

you bring up the best point: who knows who's right?

many times, we believe what our parents believe. that's why americans are predominantly christian, and middle easterners are mostly muslim. it's not because americans are more enlightened.

there is ultimately (and can only be) one truth...either way, most everybody who is religious, for that reason, is wrong. what if zeus is the one true god - then were all in trouble!

Because the easiest way to stand tall is to kick the legs out from other people around you.

Some choices are more pitiable than others, and I'm a kind man by nature.
