Hopefully he realized he could have been lost eternally upon many occasions and decided to give his life to Christ. I've met people with the same story, a few things different, but when they make THE DECISION they are a new person, all their sins have been forgiven and a burden has been lifted. I hope this is the case for your friend and I really hope you are happy for him and will follow suit. But I've got the feeling you're already there. God bless you both!!

All sorts of people completely miss the clue by fours sent by the universe.... and yet get caught by something a little more subtle. Revelations and awakenings do not always come from what observers would call dramatic experiences. It could be as simple as he woke up one day an recognised how much of his misery was of his own making.

It's called a near death experience. He has a new lease on life now. If you are any kind of a friend at all, you will support him. He needs someone to believe in him right now. Your friendship and acceptance could make a difference in his life.

I don't know, but why don't you ask him,as it seems to me like you could have been on the same path to where ever,
now is your chance to try some thing completely different.
Go for it ,you might be enlightened??

Could it be that he had a near death experience? Here is a link to some of the most fascinating reading I've ever seen: http://www.nderf.org/

I believe that God is continually calling to us, but too often we choose not to listen. Perhaps he reached a point when there was nothing else to hear, and so he listened.

Sometimes people have to reach the lowest of low before they can begin to climb out of the trench they dug for themselves. I dont know what makes them turn around, but I suspect it is somehow God.

Good for your friend. This has happened to a lot of people facing death.

If he was about to die or something, maybe he saw that
he has done so many bad things in his life and he learned
to value his life and change so that he can enjoy his life
before he dies. That's my theory. :p

As everyone else said, it sounds as if he has found God. I hope you are a Christian. If not, talk to your friend and be enlightened yourself. Be true to him and he will be true to you.
