That depends on a lot of things: your effort, your abilities, your talent level, the training manuel or trainer you use, your coordination, and the type of guitar you are trying to learn on. Even the strings play a part in your learning process. But the best way is to practice every spare minute you have. 30 minutes a day is only 1/48th of the entire day. That isn't long if you are planning on being the best you can be. Just remember that you will get out of it what you put into it.

It depends on the individual, how talented you are and if your a quick learner, it takes most people years to become a great guitarist. I use to play at least six hours a day, two hours at a time, and I never became the greatest classical guitarist that I wanted to be, not a star, I never wanted that , I talking about being able to play every Bach and complicated piece that I wanted to play, especially songs with tremolo, some of us play well enough but not up to what we would like to be, yet some fourteen year old makes his debut and sounds like he's been playing for twenty years, and it almost seems effortless when they play. There's a few of them on youtube. So the time that you put in to it has nothing to do with it, it's all talent, and I think some people are just born with that ability to play effortlessly, and others have to work for years. So there's no way of telling how long it will take a person to become proficient on the guitar, after your playing about a year or so you'll be able to tell how long it's going to take you to where you want to be.

If you want to spend 30 minutes a day, make the most of your time-
1-If you're taking lessons, ask your teacher to set you up with a practice plan.
2- If you're learning on your own, start by getting rid of all distractions- turn off the TV, Internet, and radio. Try to practice in the same place at about the same time every day.
There's a lot of advice out there, but a good site is
www.guitarprinciples.com-it's really helped me a lot- Good Luck!

That would be a minimum to practice. And it will take a while to get really good. Most people who are rally serious shoot for at least one hour a day. In college they expect 1-2 hours a day, not joking. It is a real commitment. definately make sure you hit all the basics when you practice, scales, chords and whatever you are working on with your teacher.
