I beleive in tongues because it's in Scripture. The denominations that don't beleive in this is because they don't understand it, or afraid of it, or have never read about it in the Bible. I can definitely back it up with Scripture.
When the Day of Pentecost had fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. And suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. Then there appeared to them divided tongues, as of fire, and one sat upon each of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.
And there were dwelling in Jerusalem Jews, devout men, from every nation under heaven. And when this sound occurred, the multitude came together, and were confused, because everyone heard them speak in his own language. Then they were all amazed and marveled, saying to one another, “Look, are not all these who speak Galileans? And how is it that we hear, each in our own language in which we were born? Parthians and Medes and Elamites, those dwelling in Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya adjoining Cyrene, visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, Cretans and Arabs—we hear them speaking in our own tongues the wonderful works of God.” So they were all amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, “Whatever could this mean?”
Others mocking said, “They are full of new wine.” Acts 2:1-13
Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I have become sounding brass or a clanging cymbal. 1 Cor. 13:1
For they heard them speak with tongues and magnify God. Acts 10:46
And when Paul had laid hands on them, the Holy Spirit came upon them, and they spoke with tongues and prophesied. Acts 19:6
to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another discerning of spirits, to another different kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. 1 Cor. 12:10
And God has appointed these in the church: first apostles, second prophets, third teachers, after that miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, administrations, varieties of tongues. 1 Cor. 12:28
Do all have gifts of healings? Do all speak with tongues? Do all interpret? 1 Cor. 12:30
Love never fails. But whether there are prophecies, they will fail; whether there are tongues, they will cease; whether there is knowledge, it will vanish away. 1 Cor. 13:8
I wish you all spoke with tongues, but even more that you prophesied; for he who prophesies is greater than he who speaks with tongues, unless indeed he interprets, that the church may receive edification. 1 Cor. 14:5
But now, brethren, if I come to you speaking with tongues, what shall I profit you unless I speak to you either by revelation, by knowledge, by prophesying, or by teaching? 1 Cor. 14:6
I thank my God I speak with tongues more than you all. 1 Cor. 14:18
Therefore if the whole church comes together in one place, and all speak with tongues, and there come in those who are uninformed or unbelievers, will they not say that you are out of your mind? 1 Cor. 14:23
Therefore, brethren, desire earnestly to prophesy, and do not forbid to speak with tongues. 1 Cor. 14:39

I believe the Holy Spirit is capable of many things. I have never experienced this and I'm trying to perceive how this is beneficial.
Growing up, I was taught that this sort of thing was false and came from the devil. I don't put much stock in that belief system now, but I still don't see how this edifies the soul. If you don't understand what yourself or someone else is saying when speaking in tongues, how is that helpful? If you're laid out, how does this help?
I Corinthians 14:5-12 are the scriptures they (parent's church) used to justify not speaking in tongues.

I'm not Christian. But, I do believe in Holy Spirit.
When the Holy Spirit touch you, it's seem like the Pentacost Day.
---
And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place.
And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting.
And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them.
And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.
[Acts 2:1-4]
