So I'm an Atheist. I think its all crap. Atheists get accused all the time of not knowing anything about a religion despite the fact that its not true and Atheists often know more about the Christian religion than the Christians do (and they are usually former Christians themselves).

But my whole family are Catholics so I know quite alot about it.

One thing that I've noticed on this site is that Protestants are lying about Catholics. Either the lies are born of misunderstanding and misinformation, or they're real lies.

Why do so many Protestants do this? If you don't understand something, why would you just rely on what your very very biased Protestant religious leader says, instead of actually researching a subject to find out the facts?

Why does this bother me? Because my family are Catholics and above all else, I hate lies. IMO, lying is the worst possible thing you can do.

Either debate with true information born from research, or don't even try, whatever you do, don't lie.

And btw, this has to do with everything. Including Atheism and science.

Why would you ever ever try to argue something if you know nothing at all about it?

Thanks. Its just becoming incredibly aggravating watching the lies they keep spewing about Catholics.

I mean, I don't agree with Catholicism any more than I agree with Protestantism but one thing I can say is that I've never seen a Catholic lie about the Protestants.

I hate lies with a passion. I'd rather a hurtful truth than to hear a lie.

I agree. I'm not sure if they are misinformed about Catholicism or deliberately misleading others.

Excellent question! If I could give you 5 stars, I would. You took the words right out of my mouth.

Like you, I am atheist but I was raised Catholic. I attended Catholic school until age 13 and most of my family is Catholic.

It drives me insane to see the types of 'questions' or claims that Protestants post about Catholicism.
No, Catholics do not worship false idols.
No, Catholics do not worship Mary.
No, Catholics do not pray TO the rosary, they pray ON the rosary.
No, not all Priests molest young children.
Yes, Catholics are Christians.

Do Protestants realize that their very faith is derived from Catholicism? I think it would really benefit them and at least make them look a bit less ignorant to know a little bit about their roots.

I see many times when non-Christians will bring up the Crusades and the Christians will say something along the lines of the Catholics being responsible for the Crusades. True, but *news flash* Cathlolics ARE Christians.

I actually have a Southern Baptist 'friend' who openly states that he thinks all Catholics are going to Hell. Why does the denomination matter if the belief is the same?

I'm completely with you, I hate lies and I hate ignorance. So more than anything, I hate ignorant lies.

I'm done with my rant now. *Steps off of soap box*

honest answer here, I've been a Christian all my life and I'm 56. I was raised a Lutheran and now am just a jesus lover, but in recent years, the last 20, the "new" Christians churches who have pulled away from their base churches have really attacked Catholics. I believe that this is that many of the Catholic behaviors required seem to be man made and another thing is that the Catholic Church is an Oligarchy, which mean no matter what the parish council decides he can over ride it :" just because he says so" man too much in it again. But I am not against Catholics, if they truly love Jesus. look up oligarchy in wikipedia

I think the bottom line is: they feel threatened. It's not just Protestant vs. Catholic, of course, you see it in every religious opposition on YA.
There's always an underlying suspicion, buried deep inside the subconscious, that they just might be wrong.... and they can't prove they're not wrong...which is very very scary... so they feel threatened. Especially when the opposer is "strong" in their faith, knows the truths of their faith, and lives their faith.
As far as their lying, I don't really think they are lying, because that would imply that they KNOW the truths about the Catholics, and intentionally make up opposing stories. Their leaders, their books, their neighbors who saw a misinformed or uneducated Catholic behaving a certain way... those are the authorities that save them from having to do any real research or study on the opposition. They're lazy. But so are Catholics when they choose to be, it's not limited to any group.
I understand your frustration. I'm sure the pagans, wiccans, Buddhists, etc. are all feeling the same way about remarks of other religions as well.

I believe your all-or-nothing, overgeneralized language is a sign of your frustration more so than a sign of reality. In truth: individual Atheists, Catholics, and Protestants have various degrees of knowledge about various topics they discuss. It would be absurd to say that someone actually knows nothing about what they say; otherwise, they couldn't say it in the first place. People from each of these three groups may embarrass those they represent by their lack of understanding what they're discussing. Hopefully, we can all keep doing better. I, personally, lack a degree of understanding in even the things I know most. This doesn't mean I shouldn't discuss these things. It just means that I should enter into such discussions with humility.

I believe we agree on this point, but we're just approaching it from two different starting points. Thanks for the word.

hold on a sec

Okay, sorry. I'm a Lutheran (catholic-lite), and I dated a Catholic for two years, so I'm with you on the they're not so bad as people on here will say.

Without having any specifics to go on to answer your question, I'll have to guess that it's their fault that the christians get a bad rap from everyone simply because they were the only church around and got a lot of money. When Luther came and pointed a few things out and started a war, more people started to ask things like :is this crusade thing such a good idea after all? (ok, not really, but they would have... notice there haven't been any more) I do agree wholeheartedly that there are alot of people who don't bother to do too much thinking on their own.

What I reckon is that the truth hurts! Therefore these Protestants simply don't want to feel hurt and in order to avoid hurt, they mentally create lies of the Catholic Church to psycho themselves that they are the true church and not the Catholic Church!!!

Well many Christians just blindly accept what they're being told...it is the true Christians who know their history...

I do not know what IMO is...but ok...

Anyway, basically what you said. I grew up in a protestant church and was told all these aweful things about the Church...I am 18 now and I start RCIA in the fall...

I've seen it too. I was raised Catholic, but now am happily Agnostic. I noticed a lot of odd things people are saying about Catholics just aren't true, from what I can remember.

because it's a very subjective subject. they talk about what they feel, or see but never give time to the study of what they saw or felt.
