I read in an ambigously-reliable source that "the story of Jesus chiding those who would stone an adulteress (John 8:1-11) does not appear until about 300 years after the Gospel of John was written."

Anyone know how true this claim is?

It's true. The KJV leaves out the footnote explaining this but it's found in other versions. Bottom line is the story was added much later. There's a lot of this sort of thing in the bible.

Most of the original documents of John do not include this passage. However, SOME do. Also, others include it, just at a different spot. It typically came after Luke 21:38. Doesn't mean it isn't authentic. However, it could be in called into scholarly question. Whenever it appeared, I think most of us can appreciate the beautiful meaning and intent behind the story. Hope that helps.

It is my understanding that nothing has been changed from the original texts that were included in the Bible. If this accusation could be proven, it would totally destroy the credibility of the Bible...and Christianity. Kind of like the Jesus tomb thing. Someone just trying to put something out there that is false...and or misleading.

Given that Jesus didn't bother to write his own book,
and everything that was written about him or attributed to him was written *long* (mostly 20-60 years) after his passing- I'd say it's true.

It may not be 300 years, but it certainly wasn't written by Jesus himself. Nothing was.

most manuscripts of the gospels date and verified to the fist century. Understand, printing presses weren't around at this time.

There are a lot of things out there that are not true...this is probably one of those. I would look this up but since you have found it necessary to hide your ambiguously reliable source...I think I will skip this one...

nope sorry I can't, but I'll tell you this: most Christians, especially the ones on this site, don't follow that example at all.
