Yes the USA Canada border is about as secure as (insert analogy that would imply our border is not secure here). If you look at the 9/11 commission report they mentioned a lot about how the terrorists used our lax enforcement on our NORTHERN border against us. Notice there was very little about the US mexico border. Also if you have crossed those border quite often in my case you would know how easy it is to illegally hop back and forth across the border. Very little to no patrol along the great lakes. One border crosses doesn't even have live crossing guards and is done by teleconference and is really only done based on an honor system. Seriously if you think Mexico is a joke look at our 49th parallel.

Border security is a joke period. But the biggest problem is currently at our southern border. With mexico's depressed economy sneaking into the US is very appealing. Canadians on the otherhand, dont have the messed up government and economy that the mexicans do and therefore have little impetus to illegally enter the US. This fact does not however eliminate the need to secure ALL of our borders. The possibility of terrorists moving dangerous materials over either border is unacceptable, and the illegal entry of foreign nationals must be stopped regardless of national origin.

Hello,

1) Canadians aren't kicking the doors off the hinges to get into the states. They got good salaries, jobs and a universal health care system.

2) We have to go through Canada to get to Alaska. Imagine a border tightened up so hard it would be as hard to get to our own piece of turf up there as to get into Korea or China.

3) When the EUC is surging ahead with their borders more open are we not going to shoot ourselves economically in the foot by going backwards against world trends? They are America's biggest trading partner; screw things up, make things difficult and they'll find new ones.

4) Got any ideas about tourism? People on both sides have always loved the convenience of easy access back and forth.
Any idea how much they spend in the US? Check the stats.
Make things difficult and they'll find other countries like Cuba and South America where food, fun and drinks are much cheaper than in the US.

5) This whole border security issue reminds me so much of the gun control issue. Everytime someone is shot, firearms become the scape goat to take attention away from social and law enforcement incompetence. Similarily this border security issue acts out in the same way. The terrorists who successfully attacked the US were legally admited and one in Oklahoma was one of our own. Look at any countries left in the world with strong, tough borders starting with Russia, China or Japan and they still get whacked. These people who want to do harm are not stupid and will always find a way to get even such as attacking people abroad etc.

The only joke about the border is that USA will only be punishing and restricting herself in such a cleanup campaign.

Cheers,

Michael Kelly

Very true. There is no active enforcement of our borders in the Great Lakes.

Not sure how secure Canada's borders are though. I wonder if it is more difficult to get into Canada and slip past, or just try to slip past our own security.

That´s intresting since we Mexican citizens don´t need a visa to enter Canada. Maybe they should stop trying to cross the southern border risking their lives and fly to Toronto!!!!

While I won't side with the Canadian government on Afghanistan or with Bush on his wars in Somalia, Afghanistan and Iraq (total policy failure based on racism and colonialism and on the false premise of pre-emptive war to prevent national security threats), I will agree with Americans about our borders, refugee policy, passports and national security. The people behind 9/11 came through our country, were granted legal asylum here and had come from questionable countries with questionable policies in the Middle East. Trust me when I say that if a country is an enemy of Israel it is an enemy of the West. This doesn't mean I reject the two-state solution but consider the bombings of synagogues in South America over the last ten years. Consider that many Jews were at risk for being taken hostage in Budapest, Hungary last year. We allow these people into our country and if they hate Israelis and Americans, why would we want them? We have troops in Afghanistan and we allow people in who want to bomb downtown Toronto and then people protest their being held without bail in jail on national security certificates because it's a 'human rights violation'? What about Toronto? Why must we engage in self-destructive policies that will turn us into the Netherlands, France or the U.K. in ten years?

Yes, it is easier for terrorists to come over the Canadian border vs. the Mexican border..

However, I don't see 700,000 Canadians per year illegally trespassing into the U.S.

The average Canadian is better educated and has more skills than the average U.S. resident. They choose not to live in the U.S. because they are smart..

Just imagine the cost to the taxpayers if the Mexican border was as porous as the Canadian border. I'm guessing perhaps 30 to 40 million illegal immigrants with limited education or skills.

Give me a break! Take care of the broken dam first. After that you take care of the dripping faucet! You fix the major problem first before it causes more damage.

The dam is Mexico. Canada is the "drip."

Have over 20 million illegal illiterate Canadians come across our borders? Many Canadians do not want to come here even on vacation.

I have not seen it, but I bet no one is actually watching it or paying really close attention to it like we are to the US/Mexico border.

Before we start whining about how lax the US borders are, has anyone noticed that every nation in the world has secure borders except the States?

And has anyone noticed that no one has ever called THEM racist for minding their own business?
