Fear.
Once one city/state conquered another, the conquered cities citizens had 2 options: convert or die. It had nothing to do with rational belief, and it has nothing to do with rational belief today.

"Eternal life" wasn't promised just a couple thousand years ago. Jesus simply clarified the promise made from all eternity. In Genesis, there's the promise that though Satan will hurt the heel of Jesus, the messiah will "crush his head." People thousands of years ago held on to the PROMISE of redemption and eternal life. They get eternal life also, even though they were born before the physical fulfillment of a promise. They had a more difficult time (I think) to believe only in the promise of a redeemer to come, not getting to see the historical accomplishment of the feat. No one can definitively answer why any or all people would worship, but one reason is they took God at his word. I think of Job (my Bible-as-literature college class prof. said it was the oldest book in the Bible). Job proclaimed in Job 19:25-27 "I know my redeemer lives, and that in the end he will stand upon the earth. And after my skin has been destroyed, yet in my flesh I will see God..."

God promised a redeemer from the very beginning when sin first entered the world and reiterated that promise throughout the entire Old Testament. Abraham believed God "and it was credited to him as righteousness." Those who preceded Christ were saved through Christ by faith. Christ died "once for all" past, present, and future.

People worshiped God because they understood that he was and is God and they realized the meaning and significance of that word.

People did not worship God 2000 years ago, they served him and did what he ask of them.

The basic premise of your question is inaccurate. The Messiah was never WORSHIPPED. He was followed as mankind's savior but even he told Satan that only one was to be worshipped and that was his Father.

The God of the Bible, Jehovah, has been worshipped going back to Adam & Eve's son's, Cain & Abel.

The Old Testament is full of Prophesies telling of a coming Messiah. Other than I would think it would be rational to worship the one who created you. That should be enough. God bless!!

Most were considered Jewish. They believed in God and that he would send his son. Those people who died before Christ, where placed in a special place in heaven together. After Jesus' death the bible mentions that Jesus goes to heaven and Frees everyone to their rightful place in heaven.

Everyone else on earth who witnessed Jesus, then converted to the new found religion, Christianity.

Same reason people have worshiped gods throughout all time. They believed that he would punish them. (Rain down fire and brimestone, kill their crops, visit diseases on them, etc.)
