I've been summoned to pay a debt in my name, but in my divorce settlement, it states that my ex-husband is responsible to pay it. It was a home improvement expense, the home was left to him, and he has sold it since our divorce, but did not pay the debt. I need advice on how to approach this. Thank you in advance for your answers.

Creditors do not care about divorce decrees. You are still responsible for the debt, so it won't get thrown out for that reason. However, if in the settlement it states that he was responsible for that specific debt, you can then turn around and file suit against him.

If this particular debt was not defined, and you just assumed since it was a home improvement expense and he had the house that he had to pay it. Then you might have a problem trying to get the money back from him in court since the debt was in your name.

If you go to the official experian website, you can pull your report online, dispute accounts that you feel you do not owe. And for your info, when it asks whats the reason for the dispute, there is an option on the drop down menu that states 'belongs to ex spouse'. If you are not comfortable pulling a report online, you can contact each credit bureau individually and dispute via mail.

So you do have options.

The person financing your debt doesn't have anything to do with your divorce so you still owe the money. Sorry I happened to me to I had to pay for stuff he got.

Produce the court documents saying he was responsible and make copies for everyone .
