most often to win a popularity contest even though you hardly know them?

A big YUCK on popularity contests. It's nice to see one's name, don't get me wrong, and I have seen mine pop up a few times, but that doesn't make me feel any less annoyed- there's an almost elitist feel to the questions as well as the same old answers. I cannot help but wonder how well you know the person you think is the nicest or most impressive. I can see singling someone out for their birthday (I always do it) or for some other special reason, but to make lists of "Who's the most this?" or "Who's the most that?" is where I believe a line should be drawn. I just see this sort of thing the way I saw it in junior high - people get hurt too easily, someone always comes out on top and someone else is always made to feel like the pariah.

What say youse?

Wow.

It really shocks me that some of you are STILL playing the game in your answer. "Oh, it's WSIDR, oh it's Jack B., oh it's blah, or blah blah" - come ON, people! It is easy to compliment someone else WITHOUT turning it into a popularity contest.

Yay - You're doing exactly what I said people in junior high school do. Was it really necessary here? I don't begrudge you liking anyone, but tell them about it YOUR way. Don't act as if this question is some sounding board to play "who do I like most". How well do you even know the people you think so highly of? Really?

Gosh, it's such a damned annoying GAME. That's all it is. Ooh, if I mention ___, then they'll mention me, and then people will see my name and say, hey, she must be popular, look, ____ named her as being the best!

I must say I completely disagree. I see no reason complimenting another should turn into some "who's hottest" popularity contest. I wasn't the one hurt by it, but I can completely understand why others were.

Raji - Bless you. Bless you for completely understanding my point. I have a blast on here. I truly like my friends here. I am in no way trying to take away anyone's fun. I like to add to it. But, same as you, I cannot do it by answering those "Who's the nicest/sweetest/prettiest/smartest/handsomest person on R&S" type questions. I wouldn't join in back when and I certainly won't now either.

Thank you Julie, Crazy Horse, and mesuggah (LOVE that name - I'm feeling pretty messugahna myself) for answering truthfully. Julie, Crazy, I hope you get to know yourselves better. :P Mesuggah, I'm thrilled you can admit that you pick a person without really knowing them.

Thrice, I know exactly what you mean. I have my own close group of folks that I enjoy interacting with but in NO way do I restrict my answers to JUST them. I have a bunch of folks on my contacts list but, that is because I find that they tend to ask questions that hold my interest (including YOU). Also, they tend to enjoy a little bit of fun as well. I like people who can be serious and yet be able to enjoy themselves as well.

As for "popularity contests", I never joined in on any of that as a kid and I'm NOT about to start now. I like who I like, have gotten to know SOME of you a bit more than just through your questions and I genuinely LIKE you for WHO and WHAT you are. GOOD Friends. I won't say exactly WHO is on my contacts list, If you want to know you can look for yourselves, BUT, you'll see that it's made up of a very Eclectic group of people from a WIDE variety of Religious and professional backgrounds. I don't play the popularity game but I DO join in on the raids and have a little fun and tend to star ALL my contacts when I can. That's enough for me. *gives Thrice his star* LOL

I doubt I'll ever get named in any of the "popularity" contests, because I'm not outrageous or vociferous or controversial or insulting or trollish enough to stick in anyone's memory. I rarely ask questions, so my name doesn't appear on the main page.

On the other hand, I admit that I do like it when I see that people have linked to my profile, because they're generally names that I recognize from questions I have answered, and I take it to mean that they found my information helpful or informative.

And I'd rather be considered "helpful" than "popular" any day. =)

Since I have such a lousy memory, if I were to answer one of these types at all, it would be with the person whose nickname I remember best. I think I did one once on Polls & Surveys, which is where this sort of thing really belongs anyway.

Now can we quit the game?

Thrice, I agree, I think that a lot of people just go with the herd mentality and name people who seem popular. I don't, I am bias I admit, I name people I personally really like and know.

Take my buddy Squishy for example, I've been friends with him awhile on here and I also talk to him a lot on the phone. I would say I know him well enough to name him as someone who I think is cool, etc... The same goes for every other person I have ever named. I never list someone who I barely know. If I list them it means I think highly of them and they've given me damn good reasons to think that.

There are quite a few I enjoy in no particular order..

Uncle Wayne
Me, Half-Baked my bad Me,Thrice-Baked :P
Lindsey
Slave to 12

There are a few more whose names elude me at present..

Most people at one time or another have wrtten something that has peaked my interest even if momentarily.. Those who peak my interest more often are those who stick out in memory better..

Addition.. Jack B. I just love when he answers a question so I can oogle that avatar LOL

Here is a link to the lovely note that the Sex Pistols sent upon recieving an invitation to the Rock and Roll hall of fame.

(Go easy cookie, we all sometimes ask questions about how people got so cool - wink)

Certain people are always chosen as the most popular, so I've pretty much stopped answering those questions. especially since I'm never on the list.

But you are always the Cookie Goddess. ;-)

I don't reply to R & S popularity contests. My friends know they are my friends. I appreciate a "happy birthday", but seek no popularity - as a downside, it tends to make one a troll target .

Pangel...

I, personally, really like those that make me laugh. Tragic Typos and Reportbot are two that I'm always pleased to find on here.

I know I'm not considered "popular," here, but that doesn't bother me--as shown in the "outside world," lol, popularity means very little in terms of good people. However, I must say--I've met nicer people here, than I've met everywhere.
