He has about 5-7 grand saved up so far. How many carats can he buy with that much?

Thanks!

I told him that I didn't want an expensive ring, but he said he doesn't want to get me a cheap ring. =/ Why is everyone so defensive?

it all depends at what store he goes to and if he goes on a sale day. :)

You can basically get anywhere from 1/2 to 3ish carats. My wife got a 1/5 carat and had it set in a diamond cut setting, which gives the diamond a look of 1/4 carot. My best friend was amrried jsut a month earlier and his wife HAD to have a 1 carat ring so that is what she got. My friend spent slightly less than I did.

The reasons for the near same cost for two diamonds so differently sized is due to the quality of the diamond.

the rules of 4C's stands here.

Carat weight: 1 carat of weight is equivalent to about .2 grams. The bigger the diamond the more costly it gets and it isnt a level increase. to go from a .99 caret to a 1.0 carat of the exact same grade is over 1.5 times more costly and that is for just .01 bigger, the thickness of a few peices of paper! Carat weight is considered the most important part of the 4 C's

Cut quality: one of the more difficult things to get correct. Cutting a stone properly gives it its sparkle. A diamond, no matter the size, if not cut correctly looks smaller than it is. opsite holds for a nicely cut diamond, good cut diamnds look bigger than they are.

Clarity: Their are several levels of clarity, and they are the I grades(Imperfects, I1 I2 I3), SI grades(Slight Included, SI1 SI2), VS and VVS grades(Very and Very Very Slight, VS1 VS2 VVS1 VVS2). Most jewelers will push you towards the V grades. I would take an SI grade which is considerably cheaper so I could go better grade on color. SI grades are still only visible to about 1 out of 100 ppl, so even if you have a slightly marked diamond it cant be seen. That is info the jewelers do not tell you.

Color: Diamonds are craded by their yellow content. Grading is from D("Icy White") to Z (almost a transparent beige).The better the color the prettier the diamond and more sparkle.

basically, this is the formula for cost for a diamond based on what you think is important....

Cost and Beauty scale:1 highest - 4 lowest

$ 4. cut B. carat
$ 3. color B. clarity
$ 2. clarity B. color
$ 1. carat B. cut

As you can see, the size is the most costly, but has the least to do with beauty. A great color, good cut, good clarity 1 carat is cheaper and better looking than a 1.25 carat with only decent color, clarity, and cut.

The size diamond you can get depends on how good of a diamond you want.

You can have a 3 carat diamond that looks like it is dirty all the time due to the yellow in it and the way its cut and the imperfections or you can have a 1.5 carat diamond that would blind a person if they seen the reflections of the diamond out in the sun.

Their are many other things that each of the 4C's branch off into, such as the crowning, angles of cut, shape, etc. I would glady talk to you more about it if you want.

Wow. There are some judgemental people out there! Don't pay attention to people that can't say anything nice- they shouldn't say anything at all then!

It depends where you are from! I'm in Australia. For that much you could get a really nice ring, and a band- maybe even 1 with stones! Probably just over half a carat with smaller stones, or maybe even 1 carat, would just depend on the cut, clarity & colour! But i'm guessing- my budget doesn't go that far!!! Have a look at sales, if you don't want to spend that much, you could get your wedding bands with that aswell.

Congratulations!!!

there are websites that list loose diamonds by quality and by price. spend some time researching these sites to find out what exactly makes a fine diamond and how much that diamond could cost. big cities have wholesale jewelry places where you can save a ton. again, have to research. google the phrase 'how to buy a diamond' and start reading!!! if you know all about diamonds you can go into any jewelry store and know if the diamond is good and if you are paying too much. this info was not available until the internet. in some big cities you can get a very very fine quality one carat diamond in a very nice setting for what you have saved. or even more. i am cracking up !!!! at all the people posting here who are outraged at the thought ! of someone having a fine diamond ring. how dare you!!! haha.

Don't worry about the carats...worry about the quality! You can get a very nice quality diamond for that amount of money that may be less than a carat. You don't want to go much bigger, because I'm sure you don't want to look at a cloudy diamond on your finger for the rest of your life! My ring is less than a carat with a nearly flawless diamond and I get compliments on how "sparkly" it is all the time...even with sunblock and lotion stuck under it! You both should do a LOT of research before making a decision...there are tons of websites and books about diamond quality and pricing. Just remember...you are gonna have to look at it every day, so make sure it is perfect for you! Good luck and congrats :)

Checkout www.bluenile.com they have a nice search engine for diamonds, and several types of settings. Along with carats, you need to decide on cut, clarity and color. Cut is the shape and the quality of it also. Bluenile is most likely cheaper than a chain jewelery store.

I think he can get you a 1 carat diamond that is very good quality.

Here is a diamond a description.

1.07-Carat Princess-Cut Diamond
This Very Good-cut, F-color, and VS2-clarity diamond comes accompanied by a diamond grading report from the GIA.
Price: $4,894

This diamond has been cut to allow it to reflect nearly all light as fire and brilliance. This is an outstanding cut with a negligible visible difference from an ideal-cut diamond, but at a lower price.

In an F-color diamond, no color is visible to an untrained eye. As the least expensive diamond color in the colorless range, F-color diamonds display minimal color difference from D- or E-color diamonds and offer a lower price.

This diamond has few, very small inclusions. The inclusions are very difficult to see under a 10x power magnification, and are almost never visible to the unaided eye. VS2 grade diamonds present an excellent value in clarity because they are typically free of visible blemishes, and they are less expensive than higher clarity grades.

Typically the man spends 2 months salary on an engagement ring. Go down to the jewelry store and look, what you can buy depends a lot on where you live. New York is probably way more expensive than, say, Iowa.

you can get a ring for less than that they may look better than a ring he would spend 5 to 7 grand on. If you two have money to spend and not worry about I say go for it!!!

But if not, buy something cheaper and save some of that money for the wedding, honeymoon, or a down payment on a house.

have him get you a nice ring for around 1500 then save the rest of the money for the wedding (weddings are expensive!!) it would still be a very nice ring. maybe he should let you go shopping with him so you can pick it out, thats what my fiance did. he also had a diamond to set in the ring so my ring was only about $700 thats why I said $1500 if you needed to buy a diamond too.
