I just bought a brand new cast iron skillet, can you tell me how to season it?

If it is brand new, wash in hot soapy water and allow to dry completely beforehand. Then you need to oil it with a thin layer and leave on a low heat for about an hour. When this is done, wipe out the excess oil and store.

Every time you finish using it, wash immediately in hot soapy water dry well and hang up to store. Make sure it is completely dry or it will rust.

Every few months you may need to season it again. Over time it will blacken. If it is able to go in the oven instead of putting it on the stove put it in the oven on 150 c for about one hour.

Hope this helps.

Preheat your oven to 350. Put about 2 tbs. of oil in skillet and spread around bottom and up sides on inside with a paper towel. Turn oven off and place skillet in oven to heat. You may leave skillet in oven over night or for a few hours. Always recondition your skillet after you wash it. Dry it very well and keep inside oiled, you can store your cast iron skillet in oven. Do not ever leave the skillet wet and do not put in dishwasher, you'll get the hang of it soon! Happy cooking!

With a paper towel give the inside of it a VERY LIGHT coating, bottom and sides, with vegetable oil or olive. Coat with table salt. Place into a hot (400-450 degrees) oven for about 20 minutes. Turn off the oven and just let it cool. Once out, rinse it with cool water just to remove the salt. Wipe it out. Dry completely. Put on burner for just a few moments to remove any residual moisture. Now your skillet is seasoned.

After using your skillet, its best if you can just wipe it clean with a paper towel. If that isn't enough, then try plain water. My Mother would disagree, but I say don't expose your cast iron to soap unless absolutely necessary. Always remove every trace of moisture so that the cast iron doesn't rust. You will need to re-season from time to time.

With a paper towel, rub cooking oil all over the inside bottom and inside sides of pan. Place pan on high heat until it evaporates. Do this several times (but allow to cool in between times). This builds a protective layer in the pan. When you wash the pan, do so gently. Do not soak or scrub, just wash. It may seem oily, but it will be clean and the oiliness protects the pan. It will last for quite a while. Don't worry. There is no health hazard to the film. When the pan seems dull redo the whole procedure. Bon appetite.

Scrub a new skillet with steel wool to remove its protective coating, and wash with mild, soapy water. (If reseasoning an old skillet, just scrub with hot water and a brush.)
Use a paper towel to coat the skillet with vegetable oil.
Heat, uncovered, for 2 hours in an oven at 250 degrees F. Let cool before use.
Tips & Warnings
Once you've seasoned a skillet, avoid washing it with soap whenever possible. Clean instead by wiping with a damp cloth after each use. If you must wash it, clean with mild soap, avoiding detergents and scouring pads; rinse and wipe dry immediately after washing, then oil lightly with vegetable oil.
If food sticks to the skillet after cooking, rub with a paper towel and an abrasive such as salt, then reapply vegetable oil. Store uncovered.
If food starts sticking to the skillet during cooking, reseason it.

coat it with olive oil, put in a warm oven (250-300) for about 45 mins. dont' use soap to wash it the first few times you use, use hot water, i recommend NOT cooking meat in it the first few uses (veggies, potatoes, pancakes) are good for first few uses.
