As the technology develops devices that are smaller and have lower power consumption, then more complex applications become realistic.

Think of the computational effort a pacemaker performs in seeing what wave is present and what corrections need to be made to keep heart performing properly for applied energy load. If this was back in the days of old tube-type computers even the thought of a portable device (much less an implantable one) would be a laughingly over complex dream.
