Isnt the answer fairly obvious? Its NYC!! Do you realize the sheer volume of vehicle traffic that must pass through these streets everyday?

I used to think that because of what we pay to live here, NYC streets should be paved in gold, but after you see truck after truck after truck after truck beat the hell out of them, you can understand why its hard to keep the streets perfectly maintained. Add to that NYC has harsh winters sometimes that cracks up the pavement, the subway system built underneath that rattles the pavement loose

It all has to do with money, there is also a crap load of traffic driving on those streets day in and day out. Im sure most commercial trucks cannot travel along some roads, however, most of them travel along the very same roads you do each day.

That can add to the wear and tear of the roads. There is constant road work going on all of the time b/c there is constant driving all of the time. You do the math.

this is why people leave their cars at home and take public transportation. And if Mayor Bloomberg gets his way, you continue to drive in the city, below 86th street and you will have to pay $8. I say leave your car at home and invest in a metrocard.
