Many people, here, have given you some very good advice. You must read. Read a variety of sources, including fiction, non fiction, magazines, newpapers, websites. Read everything you can get your hands on.
Start with subjects that interest you, and then, branch out. Look up words you are not sure of. If something catches your eye, dig a little deeper to find out more about it. This, in turn, may lead to something else.
Worked for me and I ended up KILLING at the original Trivial Pursuit. I end up shouting out answers on Jeopardy before Alex finishes reading.
It also helps me maintain a 16% Best Answer rating on Yahoo Answers, with almost 4,000 questions answered. (not the BEST percentage, but I'm still pretty proud of my efforts.)

read books, like encyclopedias, always watch news or news papers, watch movies and then gather all the information you got and decide which among which is true..!!

start reading everything and believe none of it, then when youre done take from it what you have learn and apply it to what you believe to be true.
