Most do it to listen to the quality and sound of the lungs also. Some doctors do it because is can help the patient to take a good breathe, sometimes the patient is nervous and will hold their breathe when the doctor listens to their heart. This gives them a big good breathe deep breathe right before!

First, not all doctors are men ... lol; second, listening for different heart sounds is made more difficult when patients are breathing -- some of the sounds we listen for are of very low intensity and frequency.

Deep breathing 3 or 4 times diverts the attentiom of the patient and relaxes him. Heart rate becomes steady, and cardiac and respiratory sounds are well heard.

Some doctors listen to the heart before listening to the lungs. It all depends on how the doctor prefers to do his/her exam.

I always figured it was because they were listening to your breathing too. Making sure your lungs are in good working order.
