You said it best when you said "to better YOUR life". You and your family might be at odds now but remember that they want what is best for you. They are worried about the unknown. Your family will still love you and be very proud of you when you graduate bootcamp.
Make sure that you choose your job (rate) wisely. Choose your rate, choose your fate. Just do your research and you will be fine!
DO NOT JOIN ONLY FOR THE COLLEGE MONEY. You will be disappointed. The NAVY or any branch of the Military is no joke. I have heard many people say that they wish that they had either joined or stayed untill retirement. I have never heard anyone who is responsible say that they wasted their time being in the Military.

why is your family at odds? it would help if you could elaborate a little At any rate, you should do what you think is best for you. Have you researched that branch of the armed services?? Are you willing to go through all the crap you know they're gonna throw your way? No doubt they will be good for you in the long run but it will be tough. You will know what you're made of by the time you get out.

well atleast you parents found out before you signed the papers talk to them about it. tell them what job your interested in and what your intent is on joining the navy.(ie. college, and money for college) My parents found out the day i signed the papers and my recruiter brought me home. But by that time i did my home work and knew what I was getting into. I knew everything up untill graduation of "A" school. They were still a little at odds but when they see you at graduation in you uniform they will understand a little more what you did and why you did it. your at the time in your life where you not there to please them anymore its about bettering yourself and they will come to realize it. Just give them time and talk to them about your decisions

Try the Coast Guard. You are in the military, at sea, helping people, and not being in combat. Besides it is your life. If you let other people make your decisions for you, you will never be happy.

Go for it and when they see your dedication and see you making something of yourself they will understand. It's your life and although they may not agree right now the first time they see you standing tall in your uniform they will be blown away...and very, very proud.

phooey on your family. if you are 18, you are an adult in the eyes of the Navy and can do whatever you darn well please. your family isn't the one who has to live your life. YOU ARE.
do what is best for YOU, not them.

You're an adult now, make your own decisions. Don't need us or your parents telling you what you should do.
