You can check the Bureau of Prisons for your state.
It may have a different name.
If you google Prisons and the State that you are in, you can get the site that you are looking for. Convicted felons do not have a right to privacy as far as their record, so you should be able to obtain the information.

You could always just ask the person first.
Besides that, it isn't that difficult to do it online if you google "background checks" or "criminal history checks." It will cost you a little bit of money, probably about $15-20. Decide how much you really want this person's criminal record (and why that is) and if it's worth the money.

You could always use a service to do a background check. They're expensive though, but that's the only way to get an "honest" answer if you don't trust the person.
