I personally like labs. They're really friendly dogs. I have two. I also like huskies and malamutes. If you like small dogs, though, I suggest a westie or a yorkie

It really depends on your lifestyle. If you have a small home, don't get a big dog. If you want a dog that you can play frisbee with, don't get a toy breed. If you aren't really active, don't get a type that's breed for action, like a herding dog. For a less active lifestyle where you won't have much training time, get a middle aged dog who's already mostly trained. If you really want a challenge, and you have lots of time and patience, get a puppy at your own risk. (smaller breed puppies I hear are easier two handle and a little less destructive) But as to choosing the perfect breed, nobody could really give you a fool-proof answer without a little more information. The AKC will indeed give you a huge list of breeds, but it only lists good points in them. For instance, Irish and English Setters are slightly more intelligence-challenged then their relatives, the Gordon Setters, but you won't find anything like that in the AKC listings. (P.S. not to offend anybody who owns such dogs, I'm only speaking from personal experience. I've met many of all three species,(my mom works with the setter clubs of michigan) and based my answer on a 'overall' perspective. That's not to say there aren't any stupid Gordons. I have two who can easily disprove said statement. XD) Honestly though, if you don't plan to show them or really require a pedigree in any way, you can save ALOT of money by getting a mutt. From the pound, from someone who's family dogs intermingled, from a breeder who had an 'accident', it doesn't matter. Save a life, get a rescue dog. Many breeds have they're own rescue agencies. And if you aren't sure about a particular breed, why not try fostering a dog from it's rescue? That way you can get a taste of what it's like to care for, and if it doesn't work out, you can help the animal find a home better suited. Try asking at the local animal shelter if there are any known breed rescues in your area, and if they don't know, try a vet. When in doubt about anything animal related, it's always a good idea to ask a vet. Chances are they'd even know of some dogs who could use good homes. Just ask around, I'm sure you'll find your perfect pet soon! ^_^

I think that different breeds appeal to different people. I always suggest that someone looking to get a new best friend go to the local SPCA, Humane Society, or Dog Pound and look at all the dogs. You'll know when you've found the one that is right for you. It may be a Heinz 57 Mutt!

Go to www.akc.org for a start, read breed descrpitions then research further to make sure the breed you like fits your lifestyle. Another tool to help you find a breed suited for you is availible at www.pedigree.com - Good luck!

Always buy from a reputable breeder, which you can find at the AKC website through the closest local breed clubs. Every breed has health issues, and good breeders will screen & certify their parent dogs to help ensure you get a healthy pet for life!

Check out AKC website and look at the breeds on there.
Visit some dog shows and talk with some people there when they are not busy showing their dogs.
Research the breed you are interested in. find out information about health issues, grooming, temperament, breed standard.

Go to www.dogbreedinfo.com and do some research..since your question is so vague it's hard to give you a suggestion as to a dog you should choose.

Me personally I love Labs and Golden Retrievers, eager to please, easy to train and just happy go lucky dogs. That's doesn't mean that my kind of dog will fit your chracteristics or lifestyle though, that's why I suggest doing some research for yourself.

Look on petfinder.com at all the breeds you're interested in. There's sure to be a dog that catches your eye. I love beagles and dachshunds, but whatever you choose will probably be there.
