My son is 28 months old. He is only child & our family is bilingual (Spanish & English). He isn't talking. He makes a lot of noise. He sometime understand what we are asking for, but some others not. I'm getting frustrated. He's on Speech, Occupational & developmental thereapies. He has hearing test & it's ok. I just waiting for Sept. to take him to a Neurology test. However, I'd like to know if anyone has had this problem & how it was solved, or not. Sometime I think there is some wrong with him, but some others I think he is ok & lost in 2 languages. Has anyone been in this situation???

Well..... the fact that he qualified for speech, OT and Developmental therapies does raise some concerns for me. And the fact that he doesn't always understand what you are saying. My son was similar (although not in a bilingual home), and we had him evaluated by a developmental pediatrician and a nuerologist for a second opinion, and he was diagnosed with PDD NOS, which is a mild form of autism. Through intense speech, OT and PT, and being in a preschool setting now that works on social skills, he has made remarkable progress.

Anyways, you are his mother, trust your instinct. Its good you are having him evaluated, and then you will know for sure what you are dealing with, and how best to treat your son (if necessary). I wish you the best of luck!!

My daughter is almost 2 and babbles like her siblings were doing before they were 1. But she has been through Audiology testing and surgury and she has speech and PT but the thing that ours recommended was teaching her sign language.
We started back a year or so ago with thank you and a couple others. Now we are up to about 20 or so. It gives her a way to communicate and not put so much pressure and frustration on her with the vocal part that she cant do.
But there was someone above that mentioned a autism screening.
That would be a good one and also the sign language works into that. My nieghbor has 2 autistic boys that both use it .

I really don't think it's a bilingual thing.I'm kinda going through the same thing. My pediatrician noticed his lack of speech at his 3yr. check up and referred me to a speech therapist. He has been in speech therapy for 6 months now and has made a little bit of progress. The speech therapist and suggested I enroll my son in a PPCD class (Preschool Program for Children with Disabilities) at the local elementary school. He is supposed to start school this fall. I think if you're really concerned ask the therapist if she thinks your son might have Pervasive Developmental Disorder. I like Autism but a highly functional type. You're doing a good thing by having him in speech therapy but in six months if you don't see an improvement talk to your pediatrician.

He is already in therapy and believe me, the speech pathologist who evaluated him HAS taken bilingualism into account, and has special training in it. He is also being seen by an OT and developmental therapist, so it's clear there is MUCH more to this than a delay due to two languages in the home (which is most unusual, contrary to popular belief). You are doing a great job by being on top of this; Bravo!!

Honey I feel your pain and frustration. My son is 30 months old, and does not talk yet. He just started to say a few more words, not much though, all he does all day is babble in his own language. Most people tell me it's because he hears two languages (Spanish & English) and that has caused some confussion for him, but that he will eventually talk, to just give him time. I know he understand what we tell him, he's really smart, and he does things that some children his age are not supposed to be doing, his healthy, and active, but he just refuses to talk. To tell you the truth, I'm so sick of waiting. Tomorrow we have a doctors, appointment, he wants to see him so that he can evaluate him, and see if it's necessary for him to go to speech therapy.
I do tell you this, I won't stop talking to him in both languages, I want him to be bilingual. Once I saw this kid in the mall, and his mother was all proud, because he was 4 years old, and spoke three languages, Spanish, English, and Italian. Supposedly his sister spoke English to him, his mom Spanish and his father Italian. I heard him talk, and it was impressive, I understand Italian, so I know she wasn't making it up.
So I said to myself, if that little kid can learn three languages, so can mine. Because I was getting a little discouraged, and was about to cave in and start talking only English around him. Besides being good for him to speak both languages, most of my family and my husbands family doesn't speak English, and my husband's Spanish sucks!, so I need him to learn.
I know eventually he will talk, I've heard that boys take longer than girls, my mom swears it's true.
One of my neighbors, has a 4 year old son, and she told me that he was the same way, but he talks now, and he can speak in both languages, so that was incouraging for me. I actually managed to get my son to count to four in Spanish this week, and I'm so proud!! I think you just have to be on top of him as much as possible, talking to him, repeating things, he'll catch on, I have faith, do you?
I probably wasn't much help to you, but I'm in the same boat, and wanted to share my experience so far. There is nothing wrong with your son, he's fine.
Good luck!
God bless.

I have and I placed my son in speech and it has helped him alot. His doctors just said he was being lazy, but I still took matters into my own hands. We have a child in your situation in my daycare and he is autistic and extremely difficult to work with. His parents who are educators and are off during the summer always bring him to daycare because that can't handle him at home and are in denial of his diagnosis. Try not to wait the sooner the better when it comes up to these situations.
