I think it depends on the actual dog. There are always going to be mean dogs of every breed but there are also nice ones. I think that with proper training great danes are nice and make fine pets.

That is definitely not true. Actually, Great Danes are voted one of the sweetest dogs in America. I used to volunteer for a woman who rescued great danes of all sorts, and not one of them was turned in (she had over 400 danes surrendered to her over 6 years) for something "mean". It was always about their size or having to move and not bring the dog with them or them just not being ready for a dog. I think a Great Dane is a great choice for a dog if you have had a dog before. I wouldn't reccomend a Great Dane if you have a baby because an accident may happen due to the size of the dog (not the tempermant as in it's not gonna attack the baby or punch it with it's paw, i mean it's tail might accidentally hit a baby while wagging). However, other than that you should have no problems. They are great dogs and will be a great life-long companion!

NO! I think they are one of the sweetest breeds! My uncles friend has a pair and they are great with everyone, including kids and babies. The first time I met them they almost knocked me over though, nudging me because they wanted to be petted! Easy to care for, too.
Please consider a shelter though. Heres petfinder (the breed is in the search engine already, just type in your location!):
http://search.petfinder.com/search/search.cgi?pet.Animal=Dog&pet.Breed=great+dane&pet.Age=baby&pet.Size=&pet.Sex=&location=Zip+or+City%2C+State%2FProv
A great dane puppy from a breeder is no better than one from a shelter! and there are LOTS of Great Dane rescues out there!

I have never heard that. In fact, I've heard the opposite. They are gentle giants. They are friendly and sweet, and have even temperments. I have never met a mean Great Dane, so I don't believe they are mean at all. They are drooly, though.

A well bred, well socialized, well trained Dane is very nice.
Unfortunately there are breeders out there who don't care what they breed, Danes that aren't socialized and Danes that aren't trained..these Danes can be very mean.

generally not. The calmest dog I have ever known was my neighbor's Great Dane all though she did get into the kitchen trash while they weren't home.
She really liked laying on the couch if you can imagine a giant dog doing that.

our dane is the biggest love bug ever! His only problem is that he wants to really be a small dog in his next life! he loves sitting on our laps but he doesnt quite fit! i have 5 kids and he is wonderful with all of them! His bark can be a bit intimidating but other than that hes great! and mine only drools when he gets drinks of water! Now our st. bernard .....well thats a diff story on the drool:)

that is from people of ignorance just because a dog has been labled dosent mean anything. I have owned pitt bulls, great danes, dobermans and rottwillers and they have all been loyal and very sweet. It is all about how you raise them.I am sure that you will do great get whatever dog you want it will be ok as long as you give it love and not beatings.

Very much a gentle giant. They are only mean if you make them that way. Larger dogs are usually almost always nice to a certain extent. Smaller dogs are more likely to bite, and bark, and be very territorial. Be prepared for cow pies and lots of lap dog love. He thinks he is as small as a chihuahua.

I have never met a mean Dane...they are known as the gentle giants of the dog world...they look intimidating because of their size, but they are wonderful, sweet, good natured dogs, who are super eager to please, and relatively easy to train.
