I am a season-ticket-holder at MSG and sometimes go alone. you will find few safer places in town than 34th street when it's crowded. IMHO you should figure out where you're staying and how you're getting to/from there, but...why come at all if you're too terrified of the city to do anything?

I have NEVER felt comfortable in the Madison Square Garden area. It's creepy.

Always have sufficient money to take a taxi to and from your hotel.

As always, you must be aware of your environment.
Make sure you know where you are going (get exact directions so you don't hae to ask stranges.) If you are a guy, you should be ok.

If you need directions, go to the subway station or ask a policeman. You can get a subway map at any subway station in NYC.

Ask the attendant at the token booth for one.
Ask for directions if necessary.

I agree with the other answer about being weary. Even though i have lived here my whole life, i still wouldnt go any place in the city alone if i didnt have to, at least not at night.

Also note, most people arent as friendly or nice as they seem to be. My mother once asked for directions from a police officer and he gave her directions to a bad neighborhood late at night. She followed the directions as they were simple, but they werent the right ones. Just be careful of who you ask.
