first of all, if you are thinking of commiting suicide, please seek help. i urge you to talk to a friend or teacher.
from attempting to hang onself, you would cause yourself breathing problems, injured trachea, brain damage (from lack of oxygen) or neck injuries which could leave you handicapped for life. do not attempt suicide...please get some help.

A nasty scar, and if you do succeed in at least damaging your spinal cord, you can end up being completely paralysed from the neck down (which will prevent you from ever completing the task). Also, lack of oxygen will turn you turn your brain to mush. It could also be rather embarassing if you become trapped in your failed noose and someone comes home to find you.
Don't do it; but if must, then don't hang yourself - in some cases the head will come off entirely, and make a nasty mess. Don't jump in front of a car or train or anything that will cause guilt in others (you will cause a lot more of that then you could ever imagine anyway, because regardless of who you are, there are people who care). Using someones gun will cause guilt issues similar to those experienced by the driver of any vechile you jump in front of; and slitting wrists will cause a mess. Drugs are going to cook your mind if you get the ratios wrong, and can give other lasting health issues. - Drowning is probably the way to go with the least issues either way ...
What is the motive however - if you think people don't care about you, just disappear for a while, and watch the search efforts - that should be more then sufficient to show you that people care.
If you think your life isn't worth living, then you should simply change that - you have control over it, or at very least can regain it, find out what it holding you down and confront it (often it will be an issue which can at least in large part be removed by communication). Get out, do something exciting, and if need be, through restrictive limits aside (prejudices, religious beliefs, morals, laws; the sort of things that create guilt from activities that would otherwise make you happy)

I don't know but I can speak to the side effects if you hang yourself and succeed as that did happen in my son's school this year.
The students were all invited to counseling to deal with their emotions. Several students had warned the father about the possibility of this event occuring. He lent his son the rope, so I imagine he felt particularly bad. The students who tried to notify the dad probably wish they could have done more. A lot of people went to the funeral and probably wish they could have done something as well.

Besides the possible scare, is the risk of brain damage. As an EMT we went out on a call where they had cut the guy down. He didn't die. But did have permanent brain damage. 5 years later I ran across him in a visit to a nursing home.

I don't know who you are or why you are asking that, but I searched to find a reputable organization (my source below) and nothing they said about hanging sounded pleasant. If someone tried it and failed, they could end up far worse off than they were. Check out the site: http://suicideandmentalhealthassociationinternational.org/resources.html, or talk to someone you trust.

OK here is what your looking at.... A possible broken neck, permanent brain damage, whip lash, getting paralyzed, losing feeling of your extremities, and it could turn a person into a persistent vegetative state.

Permanent brain damage.
I work for a mental health agency, and we have a client who did that. Now he's paralyzed from the neck down.

You need to talk to someone right away if you are thinking of hanging yourself. Call a suicide hotline or just call 911 and they can get you some help. At least talk to someone in your family who you are close to.

It depends. Usually there's some sort of brain damage due to insufficient oxygen while you're choking. The longer you can't breathe, the more damage.
